Altoona wrestling falters

BELLEFONTE – The Altoona Area High School wrestling team opened up the District 6 Class AAA Duals on Monday night with a 62-9 loss at Bellefonte.

Bellefonte was the No. 3 seed while Altoona came in as the No. 6 seed. The Red Raiders will wrestle No. 2 Mifflin County next in the semifinals on Saturday at Tyrone Area High School.

Top-seeded Central Mountain will face Wednesday’s State College-Philipsburg-Osceola winner in the other semifinal on Saturday. The two winners will then meet in the finals.

The Mountain Lions’ lone victories came at 152 and 106 pounds. D.J. Hollingshead scored a fall in 3:02 for his win at 152, while Cole Manley scored a decision at 106.

“We had two pretty good matches. Manley got a nice win against an upperclassman,” Altoona coach Joel Gilbert said. “We competed in some of the other weight classes, too. We came down looking for competition, and we definitely found it.”

Altoona fell to 5-9, while Bellefonte improved to 9-3.
