Six capture titles at Mountaineer tourney

PHILIPSBURG – Six area wrestlers captured titles at the season-opening Mountaineer Tournament at Philipsburg-Osceola, and the home team finished in second place in the team standings.

P-O’s Chris Thompson (120), Bub Lumadue (182) and Nick Gray (220), Altoona’s Cole Manley (106) and D.J. Hollingshead (152) and Moshannon Valley’s Jack Bunnell (285) all won their weight classes.

Bryce Bennett (106) and Dakota Weitoish (132) had to settle for second for the Mounties, who finished second by 22 points, 215-193, to New Oxford. Altoona (124) was sixth, and Mo Valley (110.5) was seventh among the eight teams.

Red Devils finish third

BLAIRSVILLE – Central Cambria went 3-2 and finished third at the Blairsville Duals, beating Indiana, 48-30, Penn Cambria, 39-37, Marion Center, 42-33, and lost to Blairsville, 48-36, and Derry, 45-36.

Max Murin (106) and Ian Ostrowski (113) went 5-0 for the Red Devils.

Four Tigers place fourth

WILLIAMSPORT – Four Hollidaysburg wrestlers finished fourth at the Top Hat Tournament at Williamsport High School.

Damian Huff (120), freshman Dalton Long (132), sophomore Noah Worley (170) and freshman Hunter Gill (285) placed fourth. Huff and Long lost by decision, while Worley and Gill were pinned.

Huff and Gill reached the semifinals before losing. Huff lost to Southwestern’s Owen Wherley, 6-0, and Gill dropped a 5-3 decision to Clearfield’s Jake Verchick.

Altoona juniors take fifth

HUNTINGDON – The Altoona junior high wrestling team finished fifth on Saturday at the Huntingdon Classic.

There were 18 teams in the field. Cedar Cliff won the event.

Altoona put four kids into the finals and came away with one title. David Hess went 3-0 to win the heavyweight title.

Taking second place were Hunter Merrill at 210 (2-1), Brendan McCaulley at 75 (2-1) and Cory McClellan at 85 (2-1).

Altoona got two into the consolation finals. Trayvon Toney took third at 145 (2-1), while Parker McClellan finished fourth at 138 (2-2).
