CRESSON – Led by five semifinalists, Huntingdon enjoyed a banner first night in the Sheetz Holiday Wrestling Classic at Penn Cambria High School Friday.

The Bearcats, with 89 team points, are second in the team standings to leader Berlin Brothersvalley (99) entering today’s semifinal round.

Five Huntingdon wrestlers – Collin Glorioso (113 pounds), Devon Green (132), Jacob Oliver (145), Logan Fisher (171), and Matt Norris (182) – punched berths in the semis by posting quarterfinal-round wins Friday.

Altoona, Penn Cambria and Central Cambria have three semifinalists apiece. Altoona’s Cole Manley (106), Hunter Hileman (113), and D.J. Hollingsworth (152) are all in the semis, as are Penn Cambria’s Nolan Link (106), Zach Stevens (132), and John Wilkinson (220).

Central Cambria’s semifinalists are Max Murin (106), Ian Ostrowski (113), and Tommy Opdenhoff (132).

Hollidaysburg and Cambria Heights have two wrestlers apiece in the semis. The Golden Tigers’ semifinalists are Damian Huff (120) and Hunter Gill (285), while Heights has Levi Neibauer (160) and Aaron Gill (285) in the semis.

Tyrone’s Jared Beckwith is in the semifinals at 195.

Penn Cambria (53 team points) and Altoona (47) were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the team standings at the close of first-night competition.

Easter reaches semis

MILL HALL – Bedford’s Ryan Easter, a PIAA Class AA state runner-up last March, was the only Bedford Area High School wrestler to reach today’s semifinals in the rugged King of the Mountain Tournament at Central Mountain High School.

Easter won three matches at 132 pounds Friday, including a 4-2 decision over Burrell’s J.R. Andrejcik in the quarterfinals.

Easter, who placed second in Class AA states at 120 pounds last March, opened the tournament with an 18-2, 2:55 win by technical fall over Austin Gahr of DuBois in the second round before racking up an 8-1 decision over Erie McDowell’s Luke Peterson in the third round.

Jonathan Gabriel, a 113-pounder, was the only other Bedford wrestler to reach the King of the Mountain quarterfinals. Gabriel lost in that round, 8-6 to Latrobe’s Ethan McCoy.

Gabriel reached the quarters via a 1:10 fall over Stroudsburg’s Adam Penbleton in the second round, and a 13-1 major decision over Cumberland Valley’s Wyatt Long in the third round.

Bedford 138-pounder Garrett Thomas enjoyed a three-match sweep in the wrestlebacks Friday. Thomas decisioned Schuylkill Valley’s Tanner White, 3-2 in the fifth-round consolations Friday. Thomas had lost his opening match, but bounced back with a fall and major decision in two consolation bouts before his win over White.
