Bedford eliminated by Eagles in finals
SOMERSET – Bedford’s Katie Lippincott had seven blocks, and Lexi Imler came up with four kills, but the Lady Bisons fell to top-seeded Somerset in a 3-0 sweep in the District 5 Class AA volleyball championship match on Thursday.
The set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-17.
Somerset (10-9) and Bedford (2-19) were the only two Class AA volleyball teams in District 5 this season, each automatically qualifying for the championship match. It was the Lady Eagles third straight district title, and they advance to a PIAA subregional tournament on Saturday at Elk County Catholic High School in St. Marys.
Makenzie McKee led the way for Somerset with 11 kills. Ashley Gross made nine digs and Savannah Gross dished out 23 assists. As a team, Somerset served up 17 aces.
HUNTINGDON – Chase Smith caught a touchdown, ran for another and returned a kickoff 72 yards for a score as Spring Cove topped Huntingdon, 41-6, in junior high football Thursday.
Alex Hoenstine chipped in for the Dragons with a 72-yard scoring run and a 5-yard touchdown.
Noah Glenny scored the Bearcats’ lone TD with a 65-yard run.

SPRING MILLS – Gary Weaver rushed for two touchdowns and 96 yards, eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for the season, as Tyrone defeated Penns Valley and finished 6-4.

PHILIPSBURG – Park Hills’ Gary Burkholder and Rafe Hite carded a 60 to beat Philipsburg Country Club’s Joe and Jim Soltis (61) by a stroke to win the net division of the PCC’s Fall Classic.
PCC’s Ryan Nartatez and Andrew Mann tied with PCC’s Jeff Martell and Joe Matsko for third at 62, while PCC’s Ed Reiter and Stan LaFuria tied with PCC’s Clayton Hetrick and Ohio’s Ron Jesson for fifth at 63.
Park Hills’ Todd Homan and Sinking Valley’s Artie Fink won the gross division with a 62. Sinking Valley’s JP Stultz and Ryan DelBaggio (65) finished second, while PCC’s Nate Lucas and Bob Mitchell (66) took third. PCC’s Jim Dixon and Pat Brown (67) took fourth, while Huntingdon’s Ed Strickler and Scott Ulrich (68) placed fifth.
