State College’s 5-first half goals stun Lions

STATE COLLEGE – According to Murphy’s Law, anything that can go wrong will.

Tuesday night, everything that could go wrong did for the fourth seeded Altoona boys’ soccer team.

Courtesy of a five-goal first half, top seeded State College ousted the Mountain Lions, 6-1, in a District 6 Class AAA semifinal match at Memorial Field.

“They were just too much for us tonight,” Altoona coach Dave Alexander said. “They were awesome, quick, they were just good. Nobody in our district would have beat them tonight.”

It took State College just five minutes to get on the board as Tucker Wheeler set up senior forward Robby Waite who buried the opening goal from the left side to give the Little Lions the early 1-0 lead.

Then, just more than 1:30 later, Waite struck again to give State College a two-goal advantage.

“Altoona pressured us for the first five minutes, 10 minutes, and it looked like they were going to squeeze it into our own half,” State College coach Danny Orton said. “Once we weathered that after a few minutes and scored, it changed the game.”

State College added scores from Will Edwards, Jake Garrigan and Kevin Reid for the halftime lead.

The Mountain Lions did manage to crack the scoreboard around the 23-minute mark of the second half as senior Danny Cowan scored Altoona’s only goal.

Alexander, whose team finished the season at 10-7-1, says that this year was a success for his team, and he appreciated its efforts all season long.

“They’re a good group of kids,” he said. “I respect them; they did everything we asked them. We just ran into a better team tonight.”

The Little Lions will be rewarded with a trip to the Class AAA championship Thursday night where they will face Hollidaysburg. The teams have not played each other this season.

“We saw Altoona this year in our regular season,” Orton said. “I have not seen anything of Hollidaysburg. We might have to figure some things out in the first five or 10 minutes, but at this point in the year we’re confident enough to say that if we play the way we can play, we’ll be OK.”
