Lions finish third at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK – The Altoona Area High School boys’ cross country team finished third out of 70 teams at the Tri-State Championships held at Slippery Rock University on Thursday.

The Mountain Lions finished with 166. Mount Lebanon captured the overall team title with 97 and North Allegheny was second with 164.

Ethan Martin of Fox Chapel was the overall winner out of more than 350 runners with a time of 16:34.

Altoona’s Dominic Stroh’s 17:05 was good enough for 12th place, while teammate Brad Foust was 4 seconds behind to place 15th.

The Lady Lions finished 25th out of 60 teams with a score of 683 points, while Villa Maria took the overall title with 184.

Breanna Schwartz of Shaler Area crossed the finish line first with a time of 18:31. Morgan Pensyl’s 82nd- place finish in 22:05 led Altoona.

In the junior varsity girls race, Altoona was ninth out of 19 teams with Zoe Delozier leading the way with a 38th-place finish in 25:12.

BEDFORD – Windber’s Cate McClain and Cassie Wentz won the District 5 doubles tennis championship on Monday at Bedford High School.

McClain and Wentz defeated Bedford’s Allison Shuke and Hannah Brown in the finals, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
