High school volleyball playoffs roundup

Top-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic defeated eighth-seeded Bishop McCort, 25-12, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17, in a District 6 Class A quarterfinal match at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium in high school volleyball Tuesday.

BG was led by Brynee Baughman (18 service points, 48 assists, 12 digs), Annie Dombrowski (18 kills, 11 digs), Logan McIntosh (26 digs) and Jennifer Patterson (11 kills, 14 service points).

“We learned a valuable lesson that in the playoffs we’re going to get everybody’s best effort,” BG coach Bob Kasun said. “We lost the third set, but to our credit, we came back strong in fourth and closed them out. Any win at the district level is a great win whether it’s in three sets or four sets.”

BG will get ready to play Northern Cambria at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at home in the semifinals. The match will be preceded by Bishop Carroll playing West Branch at 6.

Carroll eliminates Portage

EBENSBURG – Bishop Carroll defeated Portage, 25-11, 25-14, 25-12, in the Disrict 6 Class A quarterfinals.

The Lady Huskies, now 18-1, will play West Branch on Thursday in the semifinals at Bishop Guilfoyle at 6 p.m. West Branch beat Bellwood-Antis Tuesday night in another quarterfinal round matchup.

Carroll got 11 service points and 17 kills from Sarah Gomish to go with 12 service points, 11 kills and 35 assists from Janelle Gueguen. Rachel Kwisnek added 10 service points and seven digs to go with 10 service points from Nicole Woomer and 10 kills from Hayley Holsberger.

Huntingdon wins in five

PHILIPSBURG – Huntingdon defeated Ligonier Valley 25-9, 23-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-11 in the District 6 Class AA quarterfinals, which put the Lady Bearcats into the semifinals.

Huntingdon will play at top-seeded Philipsburg-Osceola on Thursday. P-O beat Penns Valley in another quarterfinal-round match.

Morgan Glover led Huntingdon (14-4) with 29 service points, while Kendall Hudy added 24, Alycia Park-Ferretti 16 and Paige Low 12.

Mackenzie Garner added 26 kills to go with 42 assists from Hudy and 14 digs from Glover. Garner also contributed 13 digs to go with 12 from Hudy.
