CC adds to its golfing history

HOLLIDAYSBURG – For the third consecutive year, a Central Cambria golfer won the District 6 Class AA individual championship. It was just a question of which Red Devil it would be.

Jeremy Eckenrode, the first-round leader by a stroke, shot a 75, the best round of the day in Class AA or AAA, and finished three strokes ahead of teammate Dom Stevens to take the title.

“I played pretty well today,” Eckenrode said. “It means a lot to be able to win districts. I’ve worked hard for this all year, and I think it’s awesome to have teammates finish first and second.”

Eckenrode wasn’t playing with Stevens Wednesday, so he didn’t know that his teammate was his main competition until after his round.

“The two I played with, I knew I was beating them,” Eckenrode said regarding Penn Cambria’s Ian Dunmyer and Richland’s Connor Moran, both of whom began the day one stroke behind Eckenrode. “I wasn’t worried about them, but I was worried about the guys behind me.”

Eckenrode’s individual championship was sweetened by another team title for Central Cambria. The Red Devils bested Richland, 645-672, and will play in a sub-regional at Down River in Everett on Friday for the right to play in the PIAA Championship.

“These guys work very, very hard,” Central Cambria coach Tom Aurandt said. “Jeremy, Dom and Gabe [Seymour] are three of the hardest working athletes I’ve seen. They play late into the evening, and I can’t say enough good things about them. It’s all about them. They are very deserving.”

Both Eckenrode and Stevens were members of Central Cambria’s team that advance to the PIAA Championship last season.

Stevens also advanced along with Eckenrode to the individual Class AA Western Regional at Tom’s Run next Wednesday. Joining them will be St. Joseph’s Garrett Bastardi, Moran, Claysburg-Kimmel’s Tyler Brown and Bishop McCort’s Nick Piskurich.

Dunmyer missed the cut by two strokes.

Brown will be going to Tom’s Run for the second consecutive year.

“It’s exciting,” Brown said. “I played by game today, and I’m glad to be moving on. I just need to take things easy this time around. Playing there last year gave me the layout of the course and will help me this year.”
