Central tops field in Windber Tournament

WINDBER – Central won the Windber Tournament, topping 11 other teams, in high school volleyball Saturday.

The Lady Dragons went 10-0 on the day, topping Rockwood, Conemaugh Township and Chestnut Ridge in pool play.

Central defeated Forest Hills, 25-20, in the semifinals and United, 25-23, 25-14, in the championship.

Ashley Smith recorded 47 kills, 36 digs, six blocks, four aces and 11 service points. Laura Ritchey added 18 blocks and 17 service points, and Megan Hauser notched 95 assists, 30 digs and 33 service points.

Anna Ormsby had a team-high 34 service points.

BG takes second

STATE COLLEGE – The Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic volleyball team lost in the silver division semifinal playoffs of the 16-team State College Invitational. BG lost 25-21 to Garden Spot in the semifinals.

The State College Tournament featured nine teams in the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Top 10 rankings.

In the first round of pool play, BG lost to Cumberland Valley (25-23, 25-21), Parkland (25-23, 25-16) and Shaler (29-27, 25-17).

In the second round of pool play, BG won its pool with a 4-2 record by defeating Freeport (25-22, 25-23) and Upper St. Clair (25-19, 25-21), and losing to Susquehannock (25-14, 25-17).

Annie Dombrowski led BG with 36 kills, 18 service points and 21 digs while Logan McIntosh added 14 points and 33 digs. Other BG stat leaders included Lindsie Welteroth (35 kills and 16 digs), Jennifer Patterson (16 kills), Alexis Hicks (10 kills and 14 points) and Brynee Baughman (22 points and 122 assists).

Central wins in OT

ROARING SPRING – Antonio Esknja scored an unassisted goal in the second overtime at the 4:21 mark to lift Central past Everett in boys high school soccer.

England tops locals

CARLISLE – Williamsburg’s Bryce England was the top local boys runner on Saturday at the 21st annual Carlisle Invitational where he competed against runners from four states in high school cross country action.

England, who ran against 215 runners, finished 41st in 16:28.

Altoona also competed where the boys finished 15th out of 31 teams.

Brad Foust took 44th in 16:30 while teammate Dominic Stroh was 51st in 16:36.

“Our runners featured better times [at this race] than at last year’s [PIAA] state championships,” Altoona coach Lee Baranik said. “The competition was fierce.”

Altoona’s other runners included Mitch Endress (97, 17:03), Jerrod Sunderland (104, 17:07), Joe Uliano (112, 17:12), Kyle Heasley (122, 17:23) and Cody Kelly (170, 18:00).

The Altoona girls, who finished 24th out of 24, were led by Morgan Pennsyl, who took 89th in 20:59.

Other Lady Lions to finish included Ellie Sohmer (122, 21:38), Diana DeBernardis (144, 22:05), Shelyn Imler (156, 22:31), Alessandra Fama (160, 23:36) and Cassidy Weyant (161, 23:38).

There were 169 girls running in the race, which was won by Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley in 17:28. The boys race was won by Zach Brehm of Carlisle in 15:28.

Tigers defeat Derry

HOLLIDAYSBURG – Mitch Augustine had two touchdown runs and threw for another to lead Hollidaysburg to a 39-0 win over Derry in junior varsity football Saturday.

Matt Viego had two interceptions for Hollidaysburg, returning one for a 45-yard score. Tyler Hiott also had an interception and returned it 55 yards before getting tackled at the 1.
