Postal Express evens up series
Postal Express entered game 2 of the Altoona Teener Major League championship series with its back against the wall.
It lives to fight another day.
Thanks to a four-run first inning, Postal Express forced a deciding game three tonight after defeating Cumming Motors 6-5 on Wednesday night at Seitz Field.
“It made all the difference,” Postal Express coach John Gressler said. “It was a big inning to get those four runs after what happened to us last night.”
Devyan Carper led off the game for Postal with a walk. Alex Hoenstine capped off the opening frame with a two-run single to give the eventual winners a 4-0 lead.
Cumming Motors wasted no time responding.
With the bases loaded, Donnie McConnell belted a two-RBI single to bring Cumming within one at the end of one.
“The best two teams are here and we knew from day one it was going to be a dog fight with them,” Cumming Motors coach Chris Sanders said. “We knew were going to have to play them three games.”
In the top of the third, Mark Ferry got one of those runs back for Postal with a RBI single to bring in John Johnson to make the score 5-3.
Cumming Motors didn’t go down without a fight.
Bowser reached on a walk to open the bottom of the sixth inning for the home team and scored on a RBI single by Catcher Cumming to cut the deficit to 6-4.
McConnell drove in Cumming for the game’s final score.
Postal Express held off elimination thanks to starting pitcher Bubba Johnson. Johnson went the distance, striking out five batters and walking one.
“Bubba’s a very good pitcher,” Gressler said. “He threw an excellent game and we know he is capable of that and we expect that every time.”
Next up for both teams will be a winner takes all game three later today at Seitz Field beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Sanders says that he is looking forward to getting back on the field.
“They have played very well all year,” Sanders said. “There is a reason we’re 21-4.”
Gressler isn’t taking the opportunity to play for the title for granted.
“I hope we come and compete and I hope we can give them a game,” he said.
