Miller leads Colton’s in farewell

Bobby Miller enjoyed what could be a fine farewell in the Mansion Park Men’s Summer Basketball League Wednesday night.

Miller scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead top-seeded Colton’s Cruisers to a 28-26 victory over third-seeded Exit Realty in the Division 5 championship game.

“This is probably my last year playing,” Miller said in the aftermath. “I’m 34, and I started playing in this league back when I was 16. I’ve got a six-year-old son now, and it’s time for me to coach him.”

Miller scored the go-ahead basket for Colton’s Cruisers, converting an assist from teammate Ben Miller (no relation) with 5:45 left in the game to put Colton’s ahead to stay, 26-25.

Phil Rimmer added a bucket when his shot from inside rolled through the cylinder, giving Colton’s a 28-25 advantage.

With just four seconds left in the game, Exit Realty’s Leonard Fiore made the first of two free throws and purposely missed the second in an attempt to give his team a chance at a game-tying, last-ditch field goal. But Exit Realty was whistled for a lane violation on the play, and Colton’s held on for the victory.

“This was a very competitive, very physical game, and luckily, we came out on top,” Bobby Miller said.

The low score wasn’t in line with the type of games that his team has been playing this year, Miller said.

“That [final] score is usually a halftime score for us,” he said. “I got a bit nervous out there, because half-court offense isn’t our game. But [Exit Realty] didn’t give us a lot of room to run.”

Nate Carlson and Steve Cogan scored eight points apiece for Exit Realty, which had an 18-16 halftime lead. Carlson also grabbed 11 rebounds.

“I think both teams played great defense tonight,” Carlson said. “They made the shots when they had to, and that’s what it came down to in the end. It was a great game.”
