Big seasons on horizon for BG, BC volleyball girls

At one point during the outset of the District 6 girls volleyball playoffs in 2012, Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic and Bishop Carroll Catholic were ranked in the top 10 in the state in Class A. With the 2013 season starting Saturday, those two are hoping to wind up in there again.

The Lady Marauders return two all-state players in Annie Dombrowski and Logan McIntosh while Bishop Carroll returns all-state star Sarah Gomish. Altoona Mirror first-team all-star Ellie Yahner also returns for the Lady Huskies. The two programs, considered two of the top teams in the state and District 6, will play each other twice during the season.

Penn Cambria went 21-1 last year in advancing to the states, but lost several players to graduation. Philipsburg-Osceola, 30-6 a year ago, returns eight lettermen this season, and Bellwood-Antis and Everett will want to build on last year’s success in the Inter-County Conference.

Several Altoona Mirror first-team all-stars return to their squads this fall, including Altoona’s Shannon Albright and Amanda Parrish, Everett’s Baylee Beegle, Philipsburg-Osceola’s McKenzie Burge, Bellwood-Antis’ Emily Nagle, Hollidaysburg’s Alex Scheel and Penn Cambria’s Tori Shingler all are hoping to get their teams to the postseason.

Here is a capsule look at teams in the Mirror coverage area.
