Youngsters find success on links
EBENSBURG – Five area golfers won their divisions when the North East Junior Golf Tour stopped at the Ebensburg Country Club on Monday.
Hollidaysburg’s Danny Stubbs won the boys 16-18 Pine Valley Division with a 78. Ebensburg’s Don Stevens won the boys 13-15 Oakmont Division with a 77, while Altoona’s Derek Fink captured the Pine Valley in the same age group with a 79. Ebensburg’s Alex Kiepert won the boys 10-12 Oakmont with a 77, while Bedford’s John Imgrund won the Pine Valley in the 10-12 with a 100.
Hollidaysburg’s David Snyder (86), Jesse Ottaway (87) and Ross Woomer (99) followed Stubbs. Ebensburg’s Gabe Seymour (78) finished second in the boys 16-18 Oakmont, while Altoona’s Chris Curfman (93) was seventh. Ebensburg’s Jeremy Eckenrode (80) was second in the boys 13-15 Oakmont Division.
Following Fink were Northern Cambria’s Hunter Duriez (89) in third, Hollidaysburg’s David Schraff (94) in fifth and Altoona’s Nate Lawhead (98) in seventh, as well as Tyrone’s Ethan Vipond and Altoona’s John Paul Duffy, who tied for eighth at 99.
Bedford’s Kourtney Mortimer (100) finished second in the girls division. Altoona’s Andrew Ferguson (91) and New Paris’ Kyler Pennabaker (104) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the boys 10-12 Oakmont. Altoona’a Jonah Brandt (104) was second in the boys 10-12 Pine Valley, while Hollidaysburg’s Quinn Garrity (113) was fourth.
PHILIPSBURG – Pat Brown carded a 139 to win the championship flight of the Philipsburg Country Club’s Walter Swoope Tournament on Sunday, while Michael Czap (141) placed second, and Nate Lucas (144) was third.
Jim Dixon won the first flight with a 151, while Tom Dunsmore (155) was second, Bob Mitchell (156) was third. Dave Brown won the second flight with a 158, while Ed Reiter (159) was second, and Denny Goss and Terry Smith tied for third at 161.
Dave Arnold won three-hole sudden death playoff against Dean Woodring to take the third flight after both had 165. Rich Clark and Hayden Hayward tied for third at 169. Brent Becker won the fourth flight with a 164, while Aaron Reifer and Max Miller tied for second at 169.
Andrew Mann won the fifth flight with a 167, while Charlie Haversack (168) was second, and Jerry White (176) was third. John Frank captured the sixth flight with a 177, while M. Gary Helsel and Ryan Scaife tied for second at 179.
Jarrod Wood won the seventh flight with a 173, while Rich Jones (174) was second, and Dave Belko (182) was third. Rob Earnest won the eighth flight with a 179, while Phil Ziff (191) was second, and Ryan Mostyn (198) was third.
Sandy Hassinger and Sandi Myers won the net division of the women’s tournament with a 156. There was a three-way tie for second at 159 among the teams of Dee Danko and Maureen Tocimak, Nancy Moskel and Georgie Myers and Gabi Barnett and Georgiann Way.
Lynn Grove and Glenn Claar carded a 99.8 to take first place in the Park Hills Country Club’s One Day Member Guest event on Saturday.
Jarome Landry and Jonathan Madey (102.9) finished second, while Dale Wills and Tony Rogers (103.2) placed third, and Ken Knepp and Gary Donnor (104.9) took fourth.
Jack Sears, Don Gillespie, Rick Drabic and Ron Dandrea won the Senior Slam on Wednesday with a 188. Basil Mannino, Vince Farabaugh, Tom Moore and Paul Smith (190) took second, and Bert Hobbs, Len Fiore, Joe Saciaro and Dave Francis (191) finished third.
Doe Bolger, Nancy Moore and Donna Mannino won the Tuesday Morning Ladies with a 140.
HOLLIDAYSBURG – Mike Settimio, Frank Ferra, Brian Dinges and Brian Durbin scored a 56 to win the take first place in the morning session of the Altoona Regional Golf Tournament at Scotch Valley Country Club.
Steve Crofcheck, Chris Johnson, Dave McCahn and Bill Phillips (57) finished second, and Jared Colmer, Brad Anderson, T.J. Moore and Dennis DeGol (59) placed third.
John Madey, John Madey Jr., E.J. Madey and Nick Peretto won the afternoon session with a 56. Steve Foreman, Bob Bilger, Dan Magee and Jim Foreman (56) took second, while Justin Kobuck, Nick George, Bill Johnson and Rob Frank (57) finished third.
Nick DeGol, Brittany Umstead, Michelle Day and Tim Keech won the first flight of the Couples Golf Tournament with a 28. Phoebe Cohen, Mike Cohen, Joe Adams and Paula Adams won the second flight with a 31. Mike Fitch, Maddie Fitch, Jim Barner and Louise Barner won the third flight with a 31.
Skill prize winners were Day (longest drive), Cohen (longest putt) and Dennis DeGol (closest to the pin on 8).
CRESSON – Denny Michina Sr., D.J. Michina, Rick Slebodnik and Larry Benton carded a 54 to win the Penn Cambria Golf Boosters Benefit Golf Outing at the Summit Country Club on Monday.
Mike Dunmyer, Ian Dunmyer, Keith Saleme and Zak Newton won a card-off for second place against Ron Burgoon, Hop Burgoon, Dale Perino and Dillon Perino after both teams carded a 58.
Skill prize winners were Alan Eberhart (longest tee shot on 3), Chuck Terek (closest tee shot on 4), Terry Stombaugh (longest putt on 5), Ray Archihofsky (closest tee shot on 8), Jack Wagner (longest drive on 16), Guido Fabbri (closest tee shot on 12), Chris Wilk (longest putt on 15), Denny Michina Sr. (closest second shot on 17), Denny Storm (closest second shot on 18) and Ron Shuty (longest putt on 2).
West Penn Amateurs
BUTLER – Altoona’s Artie Fink Jr. carded a 146 at the 113th West Penn Amateur Championship at Butler Country Club – eight strokes behind the winner.
Hollidaysburg’s David DeGol (148) also played and made the cut. Hollidaysburg’s Sam Lafferty (150) didn’t make the cut.
West Penn Juniors
PITTSBURGH – Ebensburg’s Alex Kiepert carded a 90 at the West Penn Boys 13 and Under Championship at South Hills Country Club, finishing nine strokes behind the winner.
HOLLIDAYSBURG – David Snyder, Harry Murphy and Denise Madden took first place in the Sylvan Hills Golf Club Sunday Scramble.
Randy Hansard, John Brinkmiller and Marian Monios took second, while Sen Thach, Raj Kansal, Paul Conway and Carolyn Painter finished third.
Rosey McCoy, Sue Green and Mary Lou Preston took first place in the Sylvan Hills Ladies Golf Association Scramble on Tuesday. Sandy Murphy, Helen Singel and Monios finished second, while Mary Jane Terza, Kath Brinkmiller, Barbara Smith and Madden finished third.
PORTAGE – Neil Rapski, Steve Shedlock Bob Knieriem won the Maple Crest Senior Scramble with a 33. Rapski also won the pin point, and Shedlock had the longest putt.
Bob Spaid, Reno Tavernini and Don Ellis (34) finished second, while Pat Podrasky, Sam DeYulis and John Price (35) placed third. The teams of Karl Vickroy and Herb Adams and Jerry Bolton, Jack Whitcomb and Ray Torrez tied for fourth at 36.
IMLER – Matt Sell took first place in the King Valley Golf Course’s Par 3 Tournament.
Brian Knisely, Wes Furry and Mark Hartman tied for second. Tyler Brown was fifth, and Dakota McClucas and Brad Knisely tied for sixth.
HUNTINGDON – Phil Thompson had the low gross of 36, while Rick Bayer had the low net of 34 in the Huntingdon Country Club’s Big Orange Golf League.
Thompson’s putt on the third hole from the fringe for birdie was a shot of the day, as was Bill Frazier’s chip-in on the seventh for birdie.
