Wise goes up 1-0 in AAABA series

The eight combined errors weren’t pretty. The swing from Darian Herncane was.

Herncane hit a two-run single late, flipping the score as Wise Trailer Sales beat Johnston Realty, 5-4, in the AAABA playoffs at Juniata on Saturday.

The win gives Wise Trailer Sales an early 1-0 lead in the best of three series. Game two is today at Juniata at 2 p.m.

“What I like about that at-bat was he faced some adversity after striking out the two times before that,” Wise Trailer Sales coach Rick Westover said. “For him to have that at-bat in that spot in the game, I think shows a lot about what kind of kid he is and what kind of character.”

Herncane, who went 2-for-4 in the game, hit the single as Wise Trailer Sales trailed in the sixth inning, 4-3. The single drove in Clint Roche and Matt Fry.

“It definitely pumps up our team [for today],” Herncane said of the comeback. “It really helps us out.”

After Roche reached on a single by Johnston’s Ty Zimmerman, Fry hit a single. Right fielder Jason Costa bobbled the ball, allowing both Roche and Fry to advance into scoring position.

Herncane then singled them in, giving Wise Trailer Sales the lead and ultimately the win.

“We had the right guy on the mound with a 4-3 lead,” Johnston Realty coach Joe Faretta said. “[Justin Taylor] is a hell of a closer. We had the right pitcher on the mound, but errors kill you.”

Taylor got the loss, tossing a complete game, allowing nine hits and striking out four.

Chad Zurat got the win in two innings of relief for Wise Trailer Sales. Brett Hileman, the starter for Wise Trailer Sales, struck out seven and allowed four hits.

The two errors in the sixth inning were a part of Johnston’s four-error day. However, Wise Trailer Sales also committed four errors.

“We made a lot of mistakes today,” Westover said. “We struggled at times. We competed, but nobody pointed the finger, blamed each other. I like that. One through 15 on our team all contributed.”

Johnston Realty jumped out to an early lead as Mike Marcinko scored on a wild pitch. Wise Trailer Sales quickly answered as Herncane hit a lead-off double and scored as Jextin Pugh blasted a homer to center.

Pugh finished the game, 2-for-3.

Johnston tied the game up in the third inning and then took the lead in the fourth when Zimmerman knocked in Ryan Hill.

But Johnston wasn’t able to overcome the two-run single by Herncane, going down in order in the seventh.

“It’s very important,” Herncane said of getting the win. “It gives us the momentum going in to [tonight]. It’s just big for us. It will give us that extra step ahead of them.”
