Dick’s Pharmacy bows out of NABF
Dick’s Pharmacy entered Thursday night’s game with Schenectady, N.Y. facing elimination from the NABF Regional Tournament.
It ended up being its last one of the season.
Dick’s committed three errors as it fell to the Indians, 6-2, at Vets Field.
“That’s how you lose ballgames,” Dick’s Pharmacy coach Pat Yon said. “When you don’t execute at this caliber of baseball, you’re not going to win.”
Schenectady got on the board first as Carmen Caruso belted a one-out single in the top of the first. He scored on an RBI double by James Waters for a 1-0 lead.
Dick’s Pharmacy responded in the bottom of the second as Dylan Oswalt smacked a line drive to left fielder Mike Squadare. Austin Pope capped off the inning with a two-run single to put the home team ahead 2-1.
The Indians snatched the lead right back in the top of the third.
Caruso led off the inning with a walk and scored on a single by Jimmy Hamilton to put the winners ahead for good at 3-2.
“We play small ball and make them make the outs,” Schenectady coach John Isopo said.
The Indians put that small to work in the top of sixth.
With two runners on, Jimmy Hamilton bunted in Caruso and Jon Mueller on a suicide squeeze for the game’s final score.
“That’s the way it’s gone for us the past few games,” Yon said. “We come out sharp, play good ball and usually fourth, fifth or sixth innings things start to unravel.”
Yon was proud of what his team accomplished during the season.
“There is just no reason for these kids to hang their heads,” he said. “We weren’t at a peak at the right time. When you play in the [Kelley Federation] and have 14 wins, you had a good season.”
Next up for Schenectady will be Baltimore Diamond Pros at 11 a.m. at Vets Field today.
