SC beats Altoona in District 6 finals

STATE COLLEGE – State College captured its 10th straight District 6 Class AAA boys tennis title with a 3-2 win over Altoona on Wednesday.

Altoona’s Chris Reighard defeated Sebastian Forrest, 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 singles, and the Mountain Lions’ No. 1 doubles team of Mustafa Ahmad and Joey Settimio defeated Luke Plowden and Enrique Del Castillo, 6-2, 6-1.

“State College has two phenomenal players at No. 1 [Cooper Josephs] and No. 2 [Ed Badding],” Altoona coach Eric Hovan said, “so we knew we didn’t have a lot of room for error.

“Our guys played really, really good tennis today. It came down to the wire, and we just came up a bit short. It was a great season for the kids, and they played great today.”

Altoona finished with a 13-2 record.

SINGLES: 1, Josephs, SC, def. Allender, 6-1, 6-2; 2, Badding, SC, def. Good, 6-1, 6-2; 3, Reighard, A, def. Forrest, 6-0, 6-1.

DOUBLES: 1, Ahmad-Settimio, A, def. Plowden-Del Castillo, 6-2, 6-1; 2, Shull-Shreyas, SC, def. Houk-Eiman, 6-2, 6-4.

Bedford in title tilt

HYNDMAN – No. 3 Bedford upset No. 2 Hyndman, 3-2, in the District 5 high school tennis semifinals and will take on the winner of the semifinal between Tussey Mountain and Windber in the championship today at 2 p.m.

Tussey Mountain and Windber will complete their suspended semifinal match today at 12:30 p.m.

Jack Bittner and James Jeffries won singles matches, and the team of Cory Black and Kevin McDaniel won a doubles match for the Bisons.
