Portage rallies to claim WestPAC

PORTAGE – Portage scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Shade, 11-10, for the WestPAC championship Tuesday afternoon in high school softball action.

With the bases loaded, Emily McCabe hit a hard line drive to short, but the ball was dropped by the Shade infielder, who then picked up the ball and threw wildly to first, resulting in an error that allowed two runs to score, with Savannah Layo scoring the winning run.

Paisley Zatek had two hits and drove in a run for the winners, who led 8-5 after three innings. McCabe finished with two RBIs.

The Lady Mustangs will host Conemaugh Valley in the first round of the District 6 playoffs on Monday.

Altoona scored seven runs in the first two innings en route to the Lady Lions second win of the season, this one over Clearfield at Logan Elementary School.

Marshe Barnes led Altoona with two hits and three RBIs, while teammate Sckylaur Kane added three hits and an RBI. Andrea Parrish contributed two hits and two RBIs for the winners.

Winning pitcher Kirsten Kerr gave up three hits and struck out eight while walking just two.

PHILIPSBURG – Kate Burge pitched a one-hitter, struck out nine and walked just one to lead Philipsburg-Osceola over Punxsutawney.

The Lady Mounties, up 1-0 after three innings, got two hits and two RBIs from Carly Gonder, two hits and two runs scored from Aisha Goss and two RBIs from Chelsea Brown.

ALEXANDRIA – Tussey Mountain took advantage of nine walks and three hits during an 11-run fifth inning as the Lady Titans disposed of Juniata Valley in just five innings.

Winning pitcher Tanesha Curfman gave up four hits, struck out four and walked just one as Tussey improved to 9-5.

Juniata Valley got two hits from Mandy Hutchinson.
