Bittner, Jeffries take title

EVERETT – Jack Bittner and James Jeffries defeated Windber’s Steven Thomas and Nick Napora, 7-6, 6-0, to capture the District 5 Boys Doubles Tennis title at Everett Area High School.

To get to the finals, Bittner and Jeffries beat H.O.P.E. For Hyndman’s Tanner Clites and Seth Cook, 10-5, in the quarterfinals and Tussey Mountain’s Mortiz Ruedinger and Neal Smith, 10-7, in the semfinals.

Thomas and Napora reached the finals with a 10-8 victory over Tussey Mountain’s Aaron Duvall and John Clark.

The Bedford team will open the PIAA State Tournament on May 24 at the Hershey Racquet Club against the District 3 third-placer.

Noah Kustenbauder had three hits to lead Sheetz to an 8-5 win over Furrer Beverage at Seitz Field.

Logan McGeary had two hits for Furrer Beverage in the Altoona Teener Major game.

n Jacob Mellott doubled among his three hits, Trey Feathers drove in three runs and Aaron Yasulitis tripled as American Family Chiropractic topped Teeter Group, 16-1, at Seitz Field.

Jarrett Hostler had both of Teeter Group’s hits in the four-inning contest.

BELLWOOD – Winning pitcher Jason Adams tossed a three-hitter and struck out 13 batters as unbeaten Cumming Motors/Club Altoona defeated host Bellwood Eagles, 6-1, in Area 4 VFW 13-14 action.

Adams also cracked three hits at the plate for Cumming Motors/Club Altoona, which improved to 3-0.

Nick Villano also knocked in a pair of runs for the winners.

PSU hockey adds four

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State men’s hockey coach Guy Gadowsky announced Monday the additions of four players, including an NHL draft pick and three freshmen, who will join the Nittany Lions for their first season of Big Ten play in 2013-14.

The additions include junior defenseman Patrick Koudys (Smithville, Ontario) and freshmen forwards Ricky DeRosa (Aston) and Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alberta) and defenseman Mike Williamson (Leduc, Alberta). The quartet will join the five student-athletes – David Goodwin, Eamon McAdam, Zach Saar, Eric Scheid and David Thompson – announced in November as Nittany Lion newcomers this fall.
