Big 2nd inning propels Everett
EVERETT – The District 5 Class AA softball playoffs commenced Thursday with Everett Area High School looking impressive, topping Windber, 12-4, in the semifinals.
“We played some pretty good ball tonight,” Everett coach Junior Bennett said. “But this isn’t the one we want. The one we want is the next one.”
Everett improved to 14-7 and advanced to next Wednesday’s district final against Chestnut Ridge.
Josie Clark, Everett’s starting hurler, gave up three runs to the Ramblers in the top of the first inning, but the Warriors got back two of those runs in the bottom half of the inning. Alison Snider led off with a triple, and Arika Price, followed with an RBI single. Price preceded to get caught stealing though. Realyn Rice reached via a single and advanced to third by an error by Windber’s left fielder Meghan Moore. Logan Brallier knocked in Everett’s second run, hitting a sacrifice fly to right to score Rice.
“We tried to come down here and jump on them early” Windber coach Cory Pavlosky said. “We did. We had the 3-0 lead, but they answered back. Everett’s a high-quality team.”
The Warriors’ second inning was memorable, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits. Windber pitcher Bre Sheehan retired the first batter she faced – a groundout by Hannah Leidig. But Sheehan did not retire another hitter until nine more Warrior runs scored. Two of the highlights were an RBI triple by Menkenzie Showalter and a two-run single by Rice.
“That’s been the story of our season,” Pavlosky said. “We always have a one-inning jinx.”
After the shaky first inning for Clark, she got stronger. She allowed one runner an inning over the second and third innings, before retiring the side in the fourth. The Ramblers were only able add one more run in the fifth inning. Clark finished with four strikeouts and walked just one batter.
After the second inning, Sheehan retired the side in order in every inning except for the fifth.
“We hit the ball well early but then later in the game, we started hitting pop flies,” Bennett said.
Windber finished its season at 5-16.
