Hockey standout Power in showcase

Macky Power isn’t ready for his high school hockey career to be over just yet.

The Hollidaysburg senior hopes it continues well into the weekend at the USA Hockey America’s Showcase at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center in suburban Pittsburgh.

Power was selected to be part of Team Pittsburgh at the prestigious event, which features high school juniors and seniors from all over the United States on regional all-star teams playing for Sunday’s championship. A bevy of college and junior scouts will be in attendance at the five-day tournament and even more will watch the games streamed live online (

Power and his Team Pittsburgh squad got off to a quick start in pool play Wednesday night with a 6-1 win over Team New York. Power scored Pittsburgh’s third goal in the triumph.

Power led the entire PIHL in scoring this season with 61 goals and 44 assists in 20 games played in the Open Class. He was the only PIHL player to top 100 points on the season. However, Hollidaysburg fell short of an Open Cup championship with a 3-0 first-round playoff loss to Baldwin.

Team Pittsburgh returns to action today at 3 p.m. against New England (1-0).

Two Lions to transfer

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State sophomore forward Patrick Ackerman and freshman guard Akosa Maduegbunam have been granted a release to transfer from the Nittany Lion basketball program. Both players will complete the spring semester at the university.

“As I do every year, I talked with each of our players at end the season to evaluate where they are and to set a course for success in their future,” Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said. “Patrick and Akosa have decided to seek opportunities elsewhere. First and foremost, we want what is best for our student-athletes. We thank Patrick and Akosa for their contribution to our program, wish them the very best, and will try to assist them in anyway we can.”

Ackerman played in 13 games in 2012-13 and 25 total in two seasons at Penn State. He scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds last season while playing 4.4 minutes per game.
