Manley aims for repeat at PJW states

Three returning area champions, including Altoona’s four-time medalist and three-time finalist Cole Manley, will lead 43 Area 2 wrestlers into the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championships this weekend.

The tournament is being held this year at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg, and it starts at 9 a.m. today with the pigtails. The Preliminaries will follow at 11. The first round of consolations is set for 2 p.m., and the quarterfinals will follow at 3:45. A second round of consys will end the day at 5:15.

The third-round consolations will begin Saturday’s action at 9 a.m., and the semifinals will follow at 10. The fourth-round consys and fifth-round consys are set for 11 and 11:30 a.m., respectively. The finals are scheduled for 3.

Twelve mats will be used for the tournament.

Joining Manley, who is an Area 2 champ at 87 pounds in the 13-14 group, as returning state champs are Chestnut Ridge’s Jared McGill at 90 in the 11-12 group and Philipsburg-Osceola’s Hunter Weitoish at 75 in the 9-10 group. Both won area titles.

Ridge’s Justin McCoy, an area champ at 95 in the 11-12 group, won a state title two years ago and placed third last year. Huntingdon’s area 13-14 147-pound champ Jacob Oliver is a returning state runner-up.

Bedford’s Kaden Cassidy, an area champ at 85 in the 11-12 group, placed third last year. Moshannon Valley’s Larry Brown, an area runner-up in 13-14 at 132, placed sixth last year. Cambria Heights’ Hunter Campbell, an area champ in 13-14 at 77, finished eighth.

Glendale’s Brock McMillen, an area champ at 60 in the 9-10 group, was sixth in 2012. Also in that age group is Altoona 55-pounder Luke Hileman, who was sixth in the 8-and-under last year and returns as an area champ.

Others going as area champs in the 13-14 group are Cambria Heights’ Bryce Campbell (82) and Alexander Albright (252), P-O’s Dakota Weitoish (132) and Cory Roach (212), Northern Bedford’s Lucas Kolinchak (157) and Mason Guyer (167), Central Cambria’s Max Murin (97) and Tyrone’s Richard Reader (187).

Going as runners-up in that group are Huntingdon’s Tyler Scott (117) and Seth Baney (124), Northern Bedford’s Zachary Clark (82) and Hunter Reyan (187), Altoona’s Hunter Hileman (92), P-O’s Matthew Johnson (97), Central’s Brock Biddle (102), Ridge’s Blake Dunlap (112) and Cambria Heights’ Biggie Gill (140).

Everett’s Garrett Cornell (70) and Mo Valley’s Jon Dale (100) are the other 11-12 champs. Portage’s Cole Sossong (95), P-O’s Brandon Anderson (135), Central Cambria’s Nathan Martin (160) and Bellwood-Antis’ Caden Nagle (200) will go as area runners-up in that group.

Portage’s Corey Sossong (70) is the other Area 2 champ in the 9-10 group. Glendale’s Tristan Rutter (75) and Logan Keith (150) will go as area runners-up, as will Central Cambria’s Corey Jones (105).

Ridge’s Calan Bollman (55) and Glendale’s Suds Dubler (60) won area titles. Glendale’s Nick Zabinski (45), Altoona’s George Boutiller (50), Central’s Andrew McMonagle (70) and Central Cambria’s Reece Warner (110) qualified as runners-up.
