Local teams hope top arms bring titles

Altoona and Hollidaysburg will be attempting to defend District 6 titles, and two more area programs that reached district title games but lost in 2012, return their top pitchers.

The Mountain Lions made it all the way to the Class AAAA semifinals a season ago but lost shortstop Christian Helsel, who is playing collegiately at Mississippi.

“We graduated a lot of seniors who played a large part in our success,” Altoona coach Tom Smith said. “However, we return some very good players also.”

The Golden Tigers return eight starters from the squad that beat Somerset in the Class AAA title game last year and expect more success this year.

“We have very high expectations to compete at a high level in every game,” Hollidaysburg coach Jon Szynal said. “We expect to keep growing as the season goes.”

Philipsburg-Osceola, which lost in the District 6 Class AA title game to Mount Union but won a state playoff game, will have pitcher Mark Curtis returning for his senior year. Curtis was named to the Class AA all-state first-team squad last season.

Bishop Guilfoyle, the runner-up to eventual state champion Bishop McCort in the District 6 Class A championship, will get star first baseman and pitcher Jextin Pugh back for his final season.

The following is a capsulized look at each area team.
