5 Blair County wrestlers one win away from titles
Five area wrestlers moved into today’s 12:30 p.m. semifinal round of the Northwest AAA Regional Wrestling Tournament – and to within one victory of a berth in next week’s PIAA Class AAA state tournament – by all scoring impressive quarterfinal-round victories Friday night at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse.
The five area semifinalists are Altoona’s D.J. Hollingshead (132 pounds), T.J. Brandt (138) and Mante Barnes (195), along with Hollidaysburg’s Damian Huff (106) and Matt Barton (285).
Brandt, a senior, is a three-time state qualifier, and Huff qualified for states last year as a sophomore.
Huff scored seven takedowns in a 15-6 major decision over Erie Cathedral Prep freshman TaNauz Gregory in the quarterfinals. Now 23-2 this season, Huff opened the tournament with a 1:47 win by fall over Clearfield freshman Logan Gilbert in the prelims.
Huff started the season at 113 pounds, but has been quite comfortable at 106 since dropping to that weight in the middle of the year.
“My goal is to wrestle tough and wear [opponents] out,” Huff said. “I’ve been training pretty hard, and conditioning is a big factor for me. I cut a good bit of weight to get down to 106, and it was tough initially, but lately, I’ve been able to manage very well.”
Huff draws DuBois freshman Shae Bloom (35-4) in the semis. Bloom decisioned Huff in triple overtime during the dual meet season, when the Hollidaysburg standout was just beginning to adjust to the 106-pound weight class.
“When I wrestled him before, I cut down seven pounds, and it wasn’t too good,” Huff said. “I’ve been looking at film of him, and I know what shots I can hit on him.”
Huff’s Hollidaysburg teammate, Barton, avenged a tough loss to Erie McDowell’s Scot Augustine in last year’s regional consolation final by escaping Augustine’s hold in the ultimate tiebreaker session to score a 3-2 victory at 285. Barton, a senior, will face Clearfield junior Jacob Verchick in the semis.
Barton’s loss to Augustine in last year’s regional third-place match cost him a trip to the state tournament. Barton, who drew a first-round bye into the quarterfinals, doesn’t plan to leave any unstone unturned in his quest for a trip to Hershey this year.
“I don’t necessarily want to call it a revenge thing, but it’s a sweet victory, and a nice way to start the tournament,” Barton (26-3 this season) said about outlasting Augustine, who had defeated him 1-0 a year ago.
Hollidaysburg coach Mike Moore was happy with the performance of both his semifinalists.
“Both looked confident and focused, and both are one match away from a trip to Hershey,” Moore said. “I’m looking forward to the semifinal round.”
Altoona boasts three semifinalists who all sizzled in their outings Friday.
Brandt, a Northwest AAA Regional champion last year at 126, ran up an 11-0 lead on St. Marys’ Alex Coudriet before applying a pinning combination nine seconds into the second period. Brandt (27-3) gets DuBois senior Garrett Brown (31-9) in the semis.
“I flowed very well out there tonight,” said Brandt, who drew a first-round bye. “There are a lot of decent wrestlers here, and I knew I had to wrestle tough.”
Brandt’s wrestling-room workout partner, sophomore 132-pounder Hollingshead, logged an 11-0 major decision over Jersey Shore freshman Hayden Swartwood in the quarters. Hollingshead (32-3) draws Erie McDowell senior standout Nick Gibson, a regional runner-up to Brandt last year, in the semis.
Hollingshead came up with two 3-point near-fall sequences on a tilt and cradle en route to defeating Swartwood.
“I felt pretty comfortable out there,” Hollingshead said. “I was working my stuff on top, and it was finally clicking.”
Barnes was stellar on his feet, riding a barrage of takedowns to a 17-5 major decision over Brashear senior Jamir Guinn in the 195-pound quarters. Barnes (27-6) opened the tournament with a 10-2 major over Titusville sophomore Tyler Nicole. Barnes will face DuBois senior Landon Hanna (33-1) in the semis.
Barnes, a senior, was diagnosed with diabetes after last year’s District 6-AAA tournament and has been keeping the condition under control with insulin since.
“I don’t really get that tired any more,” he said. “I train really hard in the practice room. I had a lot of different things — single-legs, bar-arms, two-on-ones – working for me tonight.”
Altoona coach Joel Gilbert commended his semifinal trio for their efforts.
“They all looked sharp,” Gilbert said. “They were all very aggressive, they controlled their matches, and they were all very physical. That’s why they’re all in the semifinal round.”
Altoona has three wrestlers – Markief Knode (160 pounds), Trent Kephart (182), and Austin Rosenberry (285) – still alive in today’s second consolation round, which begins at 10 a.m. Philipsburg-Osceola has five wrestlers – Bryan Descavish (120), Caleb Shively (138), Jay Prentice (170), Dennis Lumadue (182) and Nick Gray (220) in the second-round consolations.
Eliminated in Friday’s first-round consolations were Hollidaysburg’s Calob Walls (152) and P-O’s Brian Evans (126) and Scott Yarger (145).
