Ridge wrestlers knocked into consy round at states

From Mirror reports

HERSHEY – Chestnut Ridge’s quest for a berth in the PIAA Duals finals ended with a loss to Boiling Springs in the quarterfinals, but the Lions are still alive in the consolations.

The Lions, ranked second by Off The Mat, lost to third-ranked Boiling Springs, 32-25, but they rebounded with a 34-24 win over No. 8 Burrell in the second round of consolations at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Ridge, which can wrestle back to as high as third place, is scheduled to take on No. 12 Central Columbia at 9 this morning in the third round of consolations. Central Columbia eliminated District 6 champion West Branch, 43-15. West Branch was dropped into the consolations with a 45-19 loss to Reynolds in the quarterfinals.

There were three overtime bouts in the Boiling Springs match, and Ridge lost two of them. Connor Murphy knocked off Bradie Bollman, 9-4, in OT in the Ridge wrestler’s first bout at 160, and Anton Morrow edged Teddy Albright, 4-2, in OT at 170.

Two bouts later, at 195, Ridge’s Brad Winegardner beat Nathan Douhin, 5-3, in overtime.

“It was a tight match,” Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. “We knew it would come down to the end. Their coach was even joking that it would be a barnburner. It was a battle. We won some nice matches at 138 and 145 [by Jerimiah Zimmerman and Kyle Winegardner].

“At 220, it was a tight score, and [Dan Albright] was controlling match, and the kid put us in a cradle and got us [for a pin]. We had our opportunities. Any time get beaten in overtime, it’s huge.”

“Bradie controlled most of the match, but he had an issue with his shoulder, couldn’t ride it out and got hit with a stalling point with 5 seconds left. Teddy battled him hard. I was really proud him, and he wrestled a great match.”

Austin Buttry (285) and Aaron Burkett (106) had pins for the Lions before the Bubblers won four of the last five weights.

Burrell jumped out to a 14-5 lead over the Lions after the first five weights – with Bollman’s technical fall at 160 as the only Ridge win.

But wins by Winegardner (195), Dan Albright (220), Buttry (285), Burkett (106), Sam Shank (113), Derrick Claar (120) and Trent Crouse (126) gave the Lions a 34-14 lead. Albright and Shank had pins.

“It was a little bit hard to get back into it for the kids. We had lofty goals. We had opportunity to get to the finals. We had them where we wanted them. The boys are disappointed, but we regrouped in the locker room. They talked among themselves and were ready to go.

“We wrestled good against Burrell. It’s no secret that Burrell is going to come after you. They took a little lead, but it turned out well. When you beat Burrell, it’s nice to put it up on your board.”

Lazor says he expects at least one more close match today. A win over Central Columbia could set the Lions up with No. 6 Bermudian Springs, which faces two-time champion Bethlehem Catholic in the semifinals. Ridge beat Bermudian Springs, 37-24, at the Dale Bock Duals.

“Looking at [Central Columbia’s] records, they’re tough,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of battles. We’re down to the top eight in the state, so there are not going to be easy ones. I think we have the team that can do it. We’ll be up and ready.

“Bermudian Springs had a couple guys out when we wrestled them, and we had a guy out. They dropped some weights and are an extremely talented team. I hope get the opportunity.”

Notes: Reynolds faces Boiling Springs in the other semifinal. … District 6 Class AAA champ Mifflin County was eliminated by North Allegheny, 46-12, in the first round of consolations.
