Black Knights pile up pins in beating C-K
HOUTZDALE – Moshannon Valley’s James Stodart and Jacob Ludwig and their parents were recognized before Tuesday’s senior night match against Claysburg-Kimmel.
It was their night, but the underclassmen didn’t have a bad night either.
The Black Knights gave up three forfeits, but they came out aggressively from the neutral position, recorded eight pins, including two in less than 20 seconds, and belted the Bulldogs, 56-24, before a big crowd at Monte Close Gymnasium.
“We talked about last Thursday, when we wrestled Curwensville, we came out pretty flat,” Mo Valley coach Justin Fye said. “When we got in the room on Friday and Monday, we did nothing but finish our shots, and I thought we did that tonight. The guys were really aggressive on their feet.”
“They were just better,” said C-K coach Dave Marko, whose team slipped to 10-8. “They were aggressive. They were physical. They came ready to wrestle, and we didn’t.”
The dual meet started with a bang for the 11-7 Knights as Bryce Bloom pinned Lane Yoder in 30 seconds at 132, and Ryan Thomas built a 12-1 lead on Cole Hypes before putting the Bulldog on his back with a double arm bar and getting the fall in 4:53.
At 145, Mo Valley’s Sam Ohler took a 2-0 lead over Kalib Weyandt into the third period, but Ohler notched a takedown and two nearfall points, and he led, 6-2, late in the bout when he took Weyandt down to his back for five points and an 11-2 win.
After C-K’s Dakotah Feathers won by forfeit at 152, Cody Hamilton rolled up a 24-10 major decision over Justin Hammel at 160.
C-K’s Matt Walter picked up the second forfeit at 170, and a couple strong 182-pounders tangled in Mo Valley’s Kent Stewart and C-K’s Cameron Strayer. Stewart was leading 7-1 when he took Strayer down to his back and got the fall in 5:15 with a headlock.
“He did a really good job wrestling on top tonight,” Fye said of Stewart, “turning the kid and getting the pin for us.”
Stodart (22-2), ranked No. 1 by the Mirror at 195, built an 8-0 lead over Scott Walter, who weighed in at 182, before pinning him in 1:41. Ludwig (21-3), ranked No. 1 at 220, took Tyler Elder, up from 195, down to his back and pinned him in 1:24 to give Mo Valley a 38-12 lead.
“I was hoping [C-K] would move up, but if they didn’t, I understood,” Fye said. “It was nice for them to have matches, and they both went out and wrestled pretty well.”
The first of the lightning-quick pins came at 285, where Jack Bunnell pinned Joel Hammel in 12 seconds.
“Jack’s been working pretty hard in the room lately,” Fye said. “He came out and went right after it. He gets pumped up pretty quickly, and he was pretty excited when he won the match.”
“I didn’t necessarily expect pins at 182 and at heavyweight,” Marko said. “i thought those were matches that were potential flip-flops, but their guys seized the opportunities and attacked.”
At 106, Mo Valley’s Nick Krupa and C-K’s Jordan Musselman traded five-point moves until Krupa reversed Musselman to his back. The end came in 1:24.
Fye chose to forfeit to top-ranked 113-pounder Josh Brown (20-5) and moved freshman Joey Vanish up to 120 – much to the chagrin of C-K.
“I know [Marko] wanted to get a matchup for Brown,” Fye said. “They have extra guys to bump around, but we don’t. The kid at 113, it’s his first year of wrestling. I’m here to help our guys have confidence and wrestle hard.”
The meet ended with a 40-second Dakota Walter pin of Vanish and a 16-second Dylan Fudalski pin of Trent Ritchey at 126, sending the Mo Valley crowd, complete with a costumed-clad student section.
“We had a great fan section,” Fye said. “The student section was great. It was pretty electric with the people cheering the whole time. It got the guys pumped up. It’s probably been awhile since Mo Valley has beaten Claysburg, so we talked about that.”
