Bearcats place 4th

TYRONE – Huntingdon went 0-2 in the District 6 Class AA Duals, losing to rival Mount Union, 44-21, in the semifinals and to Penns Valley, 42-29, in the consolation finals on Saturday at Tyrone High School.

West Branch won the championship with a 43-17 win over Mount Union. The Warriors reached the finals with a 39-24 win over Penns Valley in the semifinals. The Bearcats beat PV earlier in the season, but they were shorthanded the second time.

“Obviously, it wasn’t one of our better days,” Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. “We didn’t perform very well. When the competition gets that good, you can’t have an off day. We have a young team, and maybe a little bit of the pressure got to us. I know we’re a better team than we showed.

“Mount Union is a very tough team. They’re very solid from top to bottom. They matched up well with us. We knew what we were getting into. Against Penns Valley, we had a couple guys banged up [Eric Lynn and Dalton Kocik]. We lost the [disk] flip, and with teams that close, things like that matter. They got the matchups they wanted.”

West Branch (24-2) won its first Duals title since 1995. Both the Warriors and the Trojans advanced to the PIAA Duals. Mount Union will wrestle a preliminary bout on Monday against the District 3 runner-up. West Branch will begin its PIAA quest Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey against the District 7 runner-up.

“I think it was a pretty good final four,” said Mykut, whose team is now 12-4. “West Branch flexed its muscles. They have a great team, and they need to be congratulated. The entire District 6-AA field is even, outside of West Branch, and even Mount Union.”

No summaries were available for the matches.

In Class AAA, Mifflin County stopped Central Mountain’s five-year run as district champion with a 31-26 win in the finals. It was the Huskies’ first district title. The meet was tied, 26-26, going into the final bout.

Central Mountain reached the finals by defeating Bald Eagle Area, 33-27, in one semifinal, and Mifflin County advanced by beating Bellefonte, 43-18, in the other semifinal.
