Altoona gymnasts finish 8-0

For the second year in a row, the Altoona Area High School gymnastics team was perfect.

Coach Michele Corle’s Lady Lions completed their second regular season with an 8-0 mark on Saturday, this time with a 136.85-128.475 victory over St. Marys at the Altoona Fieldhouse.

“They were very focused on the meet,” said Corle, whose club has turned in back-to-back 8-0 seasons under her. “One of their goals was to go undefeated this season. They practiced hard all week, and this was their best meet all season. It was their highest team score all season.”

Altoona’s Caitlyn Hall aided in the victory, thanks to first-place finishes in the vault (9.15), the bars (8.9), the floor (9.05) and the all-around (35.7). Teammate Abby Wagner took home top honors in the balance beam (8.65).

“About halfway through the season, once we had seen each of our opponents, and as our team score got better and our individual routines got better, I thought [finishing 8-0) was an obtainable goal,” Corle said.

Altoona seniors on the 14-team squad are Tori and Alex Misitano, Meagan Shultz, Geraldine Stevens, Miranda Sparkman and Cortnie Lauritsen.

The Lady Lions will compete next Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Central Pennsylvania Gymnastics League Championships at the Bellefonte Middle School. The following weekend, the team heads to Pittsburgh for the Pa. Classic.
