Upper weights carry Trojans past Huntingdon
HUNTINGDON – From 113 to 160 in a clash of once-beaten rivals, Huntingdon went 5-3 in eight bouts where points were given up grudgingly. Every bout but one was decided by two points or less.
The problem for the Bearcats, however, were the other five contested bouts.
The Trojans recorded pins in all five from their talented upperweights, including two to begin the dual meet and three to end it, to beat the Bearcats, 39-16, Tuesday night before a large crowd.
“There’s definitely some areas we need to improve,” Mount Union coach Corey Wertz said. “But, hey, we’ll take care of that tomorrow. A win is a win. I thought the guys wrestled pretty decent, and they went after bonus points. That was the key. I thought we could win every match from 145 up, and I knew the other ones would be close matches.”
“We were good in spots,” Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. “We couldn’t stay off our backs, and, obviously, that was the difference. The bottom line is they’re good, and they’ve got hammers up top. They were able to maximize their points up top. We knew it would be close through the middle. Our kids are quality kids too.”
The Trojans hiked their record to 14-1, while the Bearcats fell to 8-2.
The match started with Philip Kyle’s 16-second pin of Tyler Wholaver at 220. At 285, Nikolas Smith took Lucas Cites down to his back in the second period of a scoreless bout and got the fall in 3:01.
Mykut chose to move once-beaten freshman Collin Glorioso up from 106, where he would have gotten a forfeit, to 113, where he faced another Off The Mat-ranked wrestler in Sage Moist.
After a scoreless first period – the second of five in the meet – Glorioso nearly reversed in the second, but Moist rode him the entire period. Moist took Glorioso down near the edge of the mat with 54 seconds left in the bout and rode the rest of the way for a 2-0 win.
“We just felt [moving him up] was something we had to do win the match,” Mykut said. “Collin wrestled well against a very good, quality wrestler. The kid got a reshot takedown in the third period, but other than that, it was nip and tuck the whole way.”
At 120, MU’s Tyler Foor scored the opening takedown of Matt Wilson, but the Bearcat reversed in the second and scored two nearfall points in the third to win, 4-2.
Bearcats 126-pounder Devon Green made a second-period reversal and tough riding in the third stand in a 2-1 win over Jake Boozel. Green’s teammate, Nathan Russell, took Kord Aurand down twice en route to a 4-2 win at 132.
At 138, Huntingdon’s Jon Wagner had no problem scoring points on Robbie Steel, scoring four in the first and in the second and adding six more in the third to earn a 14-4 major decision.
The 145-pound bout between Mount Union’s Tyler Long and Huntingdon’s Eric Lynn appeared to be headed to overtime tied at 3-3, but Long escaped with .2 seconds left on the clock to win, 5-3.
“He just left off the pressure,” Mykut said. “He let his hips come up and got a little sloppy at the end.”
Bearcat 152-pounder Logan Fisher broke a 2-2 tie with Jeremy Hess in the third period by tilting Hess for two back points with 30 seconds left to win, 4-2.
“Our kids wrestled really well through the middle,” Mykut said.
After MU’s Dylan Smith edged Matt Norris, 3-1, the Trojans pulled away with the pins. Cory Kylor, Darrian Stapleton and Devon Kylor earned pins in the final three weights to close out the meet.
“The bottom line is we’ve got to get better up top,” Mykut said. “We can’t give up six points the way we were giving up tonight if we’re able to do anything in the postseason as a team.”
The Trojans, whose only loss was to West Branch (40-21), and the Bearcats could meet again in the District 6 Duals.
“They have a good team,” Wertz said. “It’s very possible we might see them again near the end of the month. We’ve just got to work to improve.”
