Ponies helpful to Curve
From Mirror reports
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Curve dominated Binghamton this year as much as any opponent ever over the course of one season.
Altoona trounced the Rumble Ponies, 9-2, Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium to win the season series, 8-1. The Curve won all five games at Binghamton and went 3-1 at home, plus they hit .300 against the Rumble Ponies and clobbered the pitching staff to the tune of a 6.64 ERA over the nine games.
Akron also won Tuesday, so Altoona remains half a game out of first place in the Western Division. Harrisburg was rained out, and the fading Senators are now six games behind the Curve for the final playoff spot with just 14 games remaining.
The Curve have a chance to pretty much end Harrisburg’s hopes over the next two days as the Senators come to town for a brief two-game series. It’s the start of Altoona’s final regular-season homestand, one that will include 10 games in nine days.
Bryan Reynolds went 4-for-5 with a homer and three runs for the Curve, who took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Jin-De Jhang. Logan Hill homered in the fourth, and Reynolds hit his solo shot in the ninth.
Will Craig doubled home a run in the first, giving him 97 RBIs, nine shy of the franchise record.
Eduardo Vera (7-3) was superb over seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Binghamton starter Harol Gonzalez (0-7) continued his miserable season as he gave up five runs — four earned — in seven innings. He has a 7.90 ERA to go along with the winless record.
The Curve went 6-2 on their road trip and are now a season-high 14 games over .500. They were just 42-39 back on July 5 but have gone 27-16 since then.
