Covering the bases
LEADING OFF: The Curve finished off a sweep of their first-round playoff series against Bowie on Saturday, giving them two days off. They’ll return to action Tuesday night in Trenton in Game 1 of the Eastern League Championship Series at 7. This is a rematch of the 2010 title series, which Altoona won for its lone EL championship.
SAFE AT FIRST: Trenton has had an incredible year. The Thunder went 92-48 during the regular season and won their opening-round playoff series over Binghamton, three games to one. They no-hit the Rumble Ponies in Game 3. Trenton’s EL-leading team ERA this season was 2.83, nearly a full run less than the Curve’s (3.67), who finished third in the league.
STEALING SECOND: Even though the Thunder have been fantastic, Altoona has played them tough. Trenton won the season series, 8-5, but five of the Curve’s losses came by just one run.
ROUNDING THIRD: This should be a low-scoring series since both teams have very good pitching. LHP Brandon Waddell is expected to start Game 1 for the Curve, and RHP Mitch Keller would figure to be in line for Game 2. No official rotation has been set by either team.
HEADING HOME: Games 1 and 2 will be in Trenton on Tuesday and Wednesday, then the Curve will host Games 3-5 from Thursday to Saturday. The Thursday and Friday games start at 6 p.m., and Saturday would be at 3 p.m. Tickets for all home games are $5 for any seat and can be purchased through the Curve’s usual ticket outlets.
