Curve lose pair to Dogs

From Mirror reports

PORTLAND, Maine – The Curve suffered a big blow from Wednesday’s brawl at New Hampshire, losing five players to suspensions and one more to the disabled list.

They also lost two games Friday night at Portland, 4-2 in the completion of a suspended game from June 11 in Altoona and then 3-0 in the regularly scheduled game.

The Curve are now a season-high 19 games below .500 (26-45) at the midway point of the campaign, plus they’ve lost four in a row and six of seven.

The most costly player lost from Wednesday’s brawl is slugging first baseman Stetson Allie, who was placed on the DL Friday with a concussion suffered when he was punched by a Fisher Cats player.

Only three Curve players were ejected from Wednesday’s game, but five wound up getting suspended for three games apiece.

A three-game suspension was expected for third baseman Jarek Cunningham, who charged the mound after getting hit in the head, triggering the brawl, as well as second baseman Gift Ngoepe and outfielder Keon Broxton.

Additionally, utility man Andy Vasquez and relief pitcher Yao-Hsun Yang were suspended three games apiece for their parts in the brawl.

Not all of the players will serve their suspension at the same time. The Curve completed a suspended game Friday night, and after that one was finished, Cunningham, Ngoepe and Yang began serving their suspensions. All three sat out Friday’s regularly scheduled game plus will miss tonight’s doubleheader and then will be reactivated Sunday.

The suspensions for Broxton and Vasquez are expected to begin Sunday against Portland and run through Tuesday’s game at New Britain.

Portland led the suspended game, 2-1, going into the bottom of the third inning and extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth.

Adrian Sampson (4-4) suffered the loss, while Mike McCarthy (6-2) gave up just one run in five innings for the win.

Henry Owens (9-3) took over the Eastern League lead in ERA from Sampson as he blanked the Curve in a seven-inning shutout. The lefty allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked two.

Joan Montero (2-2) gave up three runs in 3 innings to take the loss for Altoona.
