Curve capitalize on chances
BINGHAMTON, N.Y.- Binghamton pitcher Erik Goeddel didn’t allow an earned run. Yet, three runs were caused by his errors.
Thanks to a three-run third inning, the Curve held off Binghamton, 5-4, before 1,695 at NYSEG Stadium on Wednesday’s night.
Goeddel made two throwing errors in the third inning that allowed three runs to score. He first allowed Carlos Paulino and Mel Rojas Jr. to score on one play, and then one batter later, Goeddel again committed a throwing error on Alen Hanson’s sacrifice bunt that allowed Casey Sadler to score.
While Goeddel did allow the three runs, he didn’t allow an earned run in the loss, his fifth this season.
Meanwhile, Sadler set a new season high, striking out six in six innings. Sadler (10-5) got the win, giving up just three hits – two of them homers.
All of Binghamton’s runs came as a result of homers, including two from Wilfredo Tovar. In the second inning, Tovar opened up the scoring with a solo shot and added a two-run blast in the seventh inning.
It was Sadler’s second appearance since the All-Star Break after suffering a right knee contusion a few days before the break. Sadler leads the Curve with 10 wins and is the first pitcher to reach the double-digit mark this season.
Luis Sanz picked up his 14th save of the year, striking out one in the final inning.
The B-Mets pulled within one in the fourth inning, but Rojas tripled, driving in Paulino in the seventh inning. Rojas then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Andy Vasquez in the following at-bat.
Both Paulino and Rojas scored two runs, and Rojas picked up one of the Curve’s two RBIs. Along with Rojas, only Hanson was able to collect two hits.
