Curve rally in 8th inning to beat Aeros

AKRON, Ohio – It looked like a balk was going to cost the Curve the game.

It was four straight walks that cost Akron the game.

The Curve scored two runs on four walks in the eighth inning, coming from behind to beat Akron, 5-4, before 2,778 at Canal Park

In the seventh inning, Curve pitcher Jhonathan Ramos balked, allowing Tyler Holt to score as the Aeros took a 4-3 lead.

However, in the eighth inning, two bases loaded walks allowed the Curve take a 5-4 lead. Charlie Cutler, Justin Howard, Kelson Brown and Carlos Paulino were all walked in the eighth inning. The Curve only had one hit in the eighth inning, when Alex Dickerson led off with a double.

Ramos, who balked, got the win as Luis Sanz picked up his eighth save this year. Enosil Tejeda (0-1) got the loss.

The Curve and Aeros traded early blows in the first inning, but Andy Vasquez tripled, scoring Howard in the second inning. Howard finished the game 2-for-2 and scored a run. He also extended his season-long hitting streak on Sunday.

The balk by Ramos wasn’t the only mistake a pitcher made on Sunday as Zach Thornton threw a wild pitch allowing Jake Lowery to tie the game at 3-3.

Almost all of the pitching was done by the bullpen due to an injury that Casey Sadler suffered after taking a comebacker off the knee. Four pitchers were used in relief of Sadler.

The Curve will now travel to Binghamton for a three-game series before returning home on July 4 for a five-game series against Erie. Altoona is 10 games under .500.
