Curve’s winning streak snapped at eight
BOWIE, Md. – The Curve’s winning streak ended at eight Friday night, but not without a fight.
Altoona rallied to tie in the late going, only to see Bowie come right back with a big inning. Even then, however, the Curve had another rally but came up short, 7-5, at Prince George’s Stadium.
The eight-game winning streak was the longest of the season and one of the longest in Curve history, falling just two shy of the team record. The club is now at the halfway point of the season and, thanks to the winning streak, has been able to improve its record substantially recently to a more respectable 33-38.
Altoona came back from a 3-0 deficit and pulled even at 3-3 in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Gift Ngoepe. Bowie answered with four runs in its half of the seventh inning off Curve starter Nick Kingham and Nate Baker for a 7-3 lead.
Back-to-back infield singles scored two runs that gave the Baysox a 5-3 lead, then Nolan Reimold drove home a pair with a single for a four-run cushion.
The Curve weren’t about to let their winning streak end so easily, though, and threatened in their final two at-bats but couldn’t come all the way. Jarek Cunningham’s sacrifice fly scored Drew Maggi, and Carlos Paulino singled home Gregory Polanco in the eighth to pull Altoona back within 7-5.
The Curve got a runner on in the ninth as Adalberto Santos singled to finish 4-for-5, but Bowie Oliver Drake retired Maggi and Polanco to earn his first save.
Kingham (1-1) allowed five runs in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss in his second Double-A start. He struck out six, walked one and allowed seven hits. Baker came on with two runners on and one out in the seventh and let both inherited runners score as Bowie took a 7-3 lead.
Baysox reliever Chris Petrini (2-3) retired only one batter in the seventh inning but was credited with the win.
