Beidle, Imgrund claim crown by beating Bedford teammates
BEDFORD — For the fourth year in a row, two Bedford teams squared off for the District 5 Class 2A doubles high school tennis championship, and for the third year running, Caleb Beidle walked away with a gold medal.
The Bison senior, along with teammate Johnny Imgrund, defeated teammates-turned opponents, Zach Kachman and Luke Dague, 6-1, 6-3, on Monday afternoon in the tournament finals. It was the third consectutive trip to the finals for Kachman and Dague, and the third consecutive time they finished as the runner-up.
“It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication these young men have put in year after year,” Bedford coach Butch Beidle said. “The big difference is that both Caleb and Johnny put in a great deal of work together in the off-season. That’s what puts them over the top.”
Beidle and Imgrund’s run to the championship started when the top-seeded pair defeated Tussey Mountain’s Kieran Gresko and Ethan Schneider, 10-0, before they defeated Somerset’s Kurt Pucci and Colby Myers, 10-3. Kachman and Dague’s trip to the finals including wins over Tussey Mountain’s Travis Lemin and Hunter Cassett in the quarterfinals and Somerset’s Quinn Egal and Jacob VanLenten in the semifinals, 10-0.
Beidle will advance to the PIAA doubles tournament for the third straight year, while Imgrund will be making his first appearance after spending the year as Bedford’s No. 2 doubles player.
“Johnny has been a pleasant surprise this season,” Beidle said. “He’s got great strokes and is starting to become fundamentally sound. He matches up nicles with Caleb and they play well together. Our goal is to win that first round match just as we did last year.”

STATE COLLEGE — Hollidaysburg fell in the Distric 6 Class 3A semifinals to State College, 3-0, when the remaining two matches were stopped after State College got the third point.
Jake Irwin lost, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles to State College’s Drew Cagle while Anthony Martinelli fell to Sankar Ramesh, 6-1, 6-0.
State College will play Altoona today at 5:45 p.m. at Penn State Altoona.

TYRONE — Nick Lewis and Dean Grassi won in No. 1 doubles action, defeating Zac Conner and Cael Long, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, but the Golden Eagles fell to Westmont Hilltop, 4-1, in District 6 Class 2A semifinal action.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 6-8. Miles Zitnay, David Assad and Anthony Constantino were all winners in singles action for the Hilltoppers.
