Smith leads Valley past Saint Joseph’s

District 6 Class 1A Volleyball Playoffs

BOALSBURG — Halee Smith’s 14 service points, including three aces, nine kills and three blocks led ninth-seeded Juniata Valley to a sweep of eighth-seeded Saint Joseph’s (25-8, 25-15, 25-14) in District 6 Class 1A first round playoff action in high school girls volleyball.

“The girls played really well this evening,” Juniata Valley coach Mary Reed said. It’s the first round and they were all really nervous but the passing was good, the serving was really good and we had good net play from Halee Smith and Emma Musser which came courtesy of good sets from Hayden Taylor — our setter.”

Musser recorded 12 kills and five blocks, Taylor handed out 15 assists and Maddy Beasom led the way with 10 digs.

JUNIATA VALLEY: Taylor 5, H. Smith 14, Musser 7, Hoffmaster 3, Beasom 5, O. Smith 1, Lightner 9.

Record: Juniata Valley (11-7); Saint Joseph’s (8-7).

Portage eliminated

JOHNSTOWN — Portage’s season came to a halt with a first-round loss to host Bishop McCort in the District 6 Class 1A playoffs.

Seventh-seeded McCort (11-7) defeated 10th-seeded Portage by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 24-26, 25-18.

Portage, which finished 9-11, got 27 assists and 17 service points from Olivia Kissell, 26 digs and 18 service points from Emma Kissell, and 10 kills, 18 digs and three service points from Summer Viscusi.

Rhianna Benton had 23 digs and five service points for Portage, which got 11 kills and two service points from Caitlyn Papcun.

Portage coach Lauren Cordwell saluted her team’s effort.

“It was a tough loss to end the season,” Cordwell said. “The girls played hard and came up short in the end. This group of seniors has worked hard all season to make it to the playoffs. They will be missed for their leadership and work ethic.”
