Bedford, Hollidaysburg looking to three-peat

From Mirror reports

Hollidaysburg and Bedford are two-time defending District 6 champions.

The Lady Tigers took home the 4A title, while the Lady Bisons hoisted the 2A hardware.

Bedford advanced all the way to the PIAA state semifinals before losing its first game of the season.

Back from Jeff Thomas’ 23-1 squad are two Altoona Mirror first team players in sophomore goalie Lindsay Mowry and midfielder Amber Thomas.

Midfielder Jenna Brown was a honorable mention selection last year and she’ll be joined by four other starters to try to pull off the three-peat.

Hollidaysburg has junior keeper Megan Cutshall, a honorable mention player, back to anchor a team that went 15-5-1 for Dave Soellner.

Altoona also captured a title with a win over State College, and the Lady Lions return junior first-team defender Ashlynn Irwin and classmate Katie Aveni, and sophomore Darrian Berkheimer to help spark their run in their title defense.

Other Mirror first-teamers that return are junior Kelly Bassett of Cambria Heights, senior Emmy Harvey of Penn Cambria, junior Kaitlyn Maxwell of Everett and senior Ashley Negley of Central.

Tyrone junior Riley D’Angelo, Blair County Christian sophomore Melanie Miller, Central senior Alana Padula, Penn Cambria senior Madison Piatak, Huntingdon junior Mikaela Reed, Penn Cambria junior Sydnie Reed and Bishop Carroll senior Kayla Repko are honorable mention players that return.

Here is a capsule look at the teams in the Mirror coverage area:

Altoona

Coach: Derek Winterburn, fourth year

Last year’s record: 9-9

Conference: Independent

Returning starters: Senior: Grace Dull; Juniors: Katie Aveni, Ashlynn Irwin, Anna Knott, Jessica Worley. Sophomores: Darrian Berkheimer, Sarah Graham, Cassie Kyle, Julia Lane.

Other returners: Seniors: Julia Wise, Breanna Wuckovich. Junior: Emilee Stirk. Sophomores: Lydia Baum, Shelby Smeal, Jocey Sunderland.

Newcomers: Freshmen: Madison Cabell, Rebecca Dull, Brooke Harrington, Ashtyn Hileman, Lauren Kiser, Danielle Mueller, Sadie Price, Morgan Sarver, Tessa Wise.

Strengths: “With so many returning players, they are familiar with the system and expectations ahead of them. They are also looking to build upon the accomplishments of last year.”

Concerns: “Transitioning our newcomers into the high school program while also helping them understand the expectations and level of play during the short preseason.”

Overall outlook: “It’s very exciting to see what the team can accomplish on the field this year. This group of players is very motivated and very competitive during our training sessions.”

Assistant coaches: Andy Aveni, Tom Lutz

Junior high coaches: Scott Berardinelli, Kevin Thomas

Newcomers: Freshmen: Shelby Ford, Josie Hampton, Lizzy Martz, Makenzie Pyle, Katelyn Shaffer, Sydney Taracatac, Juliana Taylor.

Strengths: “Skilled players, team effort, returning experience.”

Concerns: “Inexperienced players need to adapt to the high school level.”

Assistant coaches: Kyler Myers, Todd Roadman, Cory Thomas

Junior high coaches: Andy Martz, Terry DeHaven, Jeff Kidd

Bishop Carroll

Coach: Cory Cree, third year

Career record: 7-29

Last year’s record: 3-15

Conference: Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference

Returning starters: Seniors: Megan Freidhof, Maddy Lee, Tory Wirfel, Kayla Repko, Kaylee Schall; Sophomores: Molly Krumenacker, Ellie Long.

Other returners: Senior: Gabby Lessard; Sophomore: Taylor Wahl.

Newcomers: Seniors: Sarah Farabaugh, Lilly Golden; Junior: Maggie Kwisnek; Sophomores: Maddy Adams, Graci Kirkpatrick, Jenna Madonna; Freshmen: Alexis Ditosti, Autumn Duman, Alayna Przbys.

Strengths: “Our returning players improved abilities and understanding of the game. I anticipate our seniors entering their fourth year on the team, namely Maddy Lee, Kayla Repko and Kaylee Schall, taking on more of a leadership role. I also hope to see sophomores Molly Krumenacker and Ellie Long, who saw extensive playing time last year, step up this year to be more dominant players on the field.”

Concerns: “Lack of depth and experience are always concerns, as well as uncontrollable injuries. With half our players being new to the team, how they improve and grow with the team will greatly affect our successes. That being said, the returning players need to take ownership of the team, as they are doing, and lead our team.”

Overall outlook: “We are a split group of players this year. We currently have 18 players on the roster with nine being returners and nine first-year players. I hope the returning players will provide support and guidance to the new players to help them develop into better soccer players. How well we gel as a team by merging both returning and new players into a cohesive team will determine our fate.”

Assistant coach: Mary Holtz

Bishop Guilfoyle

Coach: Joe DeLeo, third year

Career record: 19-18-1

Last year’s record: 3-15

Conference: Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference

Strengths: “We have a dedicated young group of core players that worked hard this offseason to improve. We are blessed with very knowledgeable assistant coaches that are always looking to make the kids better.”

Concerns: “We are short on experience. Although we have several returning starters, there are no three- or four-year starters to anchor the team.”

Overall outlook: “We hope to build upon what we learned last year and win more games than we did in 2017.”

Assistant coaches: Paul Yingling, Erin Allison

Blair County Christian

Coach: Kari Dull, third year

Career record: 16-9-6

Other returners: Sophomore: Micaylee Duey; Eighth grader: Chelsea LaMagna.

Newcomers: Seventh graders: Miriam Claar, Lydia Hileman, Kira Suhoney, Anna Yingling.

Strengths: “The strengths that I foresee is that we have good unity as a team and a solid team with 10 returning starters. Our theme Bible verse that we are memorizing and focusing on as a team is Philippians 2:2 which challenges us to be of one accord, and we aim to have that unity as a team.”

Concerns: “A possible concern is that as we approach different teams, we go in timid and we need to go in with a healthy level of confidence.”

Overall outlook: “We have a very positive outlook as we go into this soccer season. The girls are using their God-given abilities and seeking to strengthen them as they put forth effort on the field during practices. We encourage one another to try to do our very best as God asks us to do everything we do for His glory. We are looking forward to a great season.”

Newcomers: Sophomores: Winter Storm, Paige Glasgow; Freshmen: Marissa Berzonsky, Diamondlynn Brennan, Kylie Coolidge, Haley Drass, Molly Hayes, Karli Storm, Dolly Yarnish.

Strengths: “We have a lot of newcomers that brought a lot of talent and flexibility to the field. We also have a lot of returning players that have been working hard during our soccer camp to prepare for the season.”

Concerns: “We lost six of our starters from last year.”

Overall outlook: “Although, we lost six of our starters from last year, we have a lot of returning and newcoming talent. The team has been working hard and growing stronger and more in-sync every day. We are hoping for a successful season.”

Last year’s record: 12-6-1

Newcomers: Senior: Kendra Fox; Sophomores: Brooke Cooper, Alicia Reedy, Jade Solnosky, Ella Vrabel, Kailey Wendle; Freshmen: Ella Anderson, Rachel Christner, Rebecca Cree, Leah Burgraff, Gretchen Lambie, Jennifer Russell, Emma Schweitzer.

Strengths: “Senior class. Most returning are starters and know what it takes to play. With only one junior on the team, the young girls will look to the seniors for guidance, and I expect them to take charge.”

Concerns: “Main concern is age. We have a pretty young group of girls. While the talent is there, the experience is lacking just because they haven’t played enough. I am afraid that it will take a few games to get into rhythm and make the game come to us, and a slow/slump to start is not a good way to start out.”

Overall outlook: “Promising. I have faith in the underclassmen to step up and fill in some needed roles within the starting eleven.”

Assistant coach: Pam Novitski

Concerns: “This will be our first year in the Laurel Highlands Conference. Coming into a new league, we’re not really familiar with any of the teams we’ll face, but we are certainly excited about the opportunity.”

Overall outlook: “We had a large group of seniors graduate last year, so our success will depend largely on our teams ability to establish a new group of on-field leadership and fill some key positions.”

Strengths: “The girls are highly-motivated and hard workers. As a group, they possess an attitude of excellence.”

Concerns: “Our concern can also be seen as a strength. We are a young team with nine sophomores and five freshmen, so our focus will be on skill development and creating a cohesive team that utilizes its skills to its best advantage.”

Overall outlook: “We are excited for the upcoming season. The girls are highly-motivated and are eagerly absorbing new skills and strategies. They are focused on developing an understanding of the game of soccer, so that they play with fluidity. We are looking forward to a great season.”
