Grand Prix finishes today

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Indy Grand Prix of Alabama was postponed on Sunday because of heavy rain.

IndyCar officials called the race after a second lengthy rain delay. It will be completed this morning with a restart on Lap 23. The race had been scheduled for 90 laps with a two-hour limit because of the heavy rain that contributed to some spinouts.

Josef Newgarden is still up front after starting on the pole followed by Sebastien Bourdais and Ryan Hunter-Reay.

n J.R. Todd won the NHRA SpringNationals on Sunday at Royal Purple Raceway for his second straight Funny Car victory. Todd powered his Toyota Camry to a 3.955-second run at 313.29 mph to beat defending season champion Robert Hight in the final round. Brittany Force won in Top Fuel, and Matt Hartford in Pro Stock. Force, the defending seaso champion, beat Terry McMillen with a 3.762 at 299.46. Hartford drove to his first career victory, topping hometown favorite Erica Enders with a 6.552 at 211.36 in a Chevrolet Camaro.

MLB sets new weather mark

ATLANTA — Major League Baseball had its 26th postponement of the season when the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves were washed out Sunday, the most related to weather through April since the commissioner’s officer started keeping records in 1986.

There were also 26 postponements through April in 2007, but one game then was called off following the death of St. Louis pitcher Josh Hancock.

US tennis in Cup final

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France — Defending champion United States will play in a second consecutive Fed Cup final after defeating France 3-2 on Sunday.

Madison Keys secured the decisive point for the visiting team by beating Pauline Parmentier 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the second reverse singles. Keys’ victory gave the U.S. an unassailable 3-1 lead over France in the World Group semifinals.

The Czech Republic will host the U.S. in the Nov. 10-11 final after defeating Germany 4-1 in Stuttgart.

The 13th-ranked Keys, a late replacement for CoCo Vandeweghe, came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set and made the decisive break in the ninth game of the second set with two consecutive winners.

Elsewhere:

n Rafael Nadal was at his dominant best against Kei Nishikori, beating him 6-3, 6-2 in the Monte Carlo Masters final to become the first man in the Open era to win the same title 11 times on Sunday. He moved one ahead of rival Novak Djokovic for career Masters titles. Nadal’s first Monte Carlo title came as a scraggly-haired 18-year-old in 2005.

Predators moving on

DENVER — Mattias Ekholm ignited the offense early with the first goal by a Nashville defenseman in the series, Pekka Rinne stopped 22 shots and the top-seeded Predators advanced to the second round with a 5-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6 on Sunday night.

Austin Watson, Filip Forsberg, Nick Bonino and Viktor Arvidsson also scored to help the Predators move on to face Winnipeg. They were 3-1-1 against the Jets in the regular season.

Nashville removed any sort of drama with two goals in the opening period and two more in the second to hush the capacity crowd. Rinne was on his game in notching his fourth career postseason shutout.

Andrew Hammond ran out of magic in net, allowing five goals for Colorado.
