Timmons returns; suspension lifted

MIAMI — The Miami Dolphins’ vanishing linebacker is back.

Miami lifted the suspension of Lawrence Timmons after one week Tuesday, and he’s eligible to play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints in London.

Timmons was suspended indefinitely after he went AWOL the day before the Dolphins’ season-opening win at the Los Angeles Chargers. The Dolphins filed a missing person report before making contact with the 11th-year veteran, who apparently was dealing with a personal matter.

Coach Adam Gase was angered by the disappearance of Timmons, who wasn’t with the Dolphins at their opener and didn’t fly back to South Florida on the team plane after Miami’s 19-17 win. The game was the first Timmons has missed since 2010.

He wanted to rejoin the team last week, and several players said they would welcome him back. Linebacker is perhaps thinnest position for the Dolphins, who were again without Timmons when they lost Sunday at the New York Jets, 20-6.

Timmons signed a $12 million, two-year deal in March after 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

To make room for the reinstated Timmons, the Dolphins waived linebacker Justin March-Lillard.

Westbrooks arrested

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Ethan Westbrooks was arrested after an officer saw a stolen gun in his car when he was pulled over for speeding, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Westbrooks was arrested Friday on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm, possessing a stolen firearm and possessing a high-capacity magazine, said Sgt. Chris Carr.

Westbrooks was stopped for speeding along Interstate 5 near Bakersfield on Friday and an officer spotted a gun in the glove box as Westbrooks was looking for his car’s registration document, Carr said.

The gun, which had been reported stolen in Sacramento in 2009, was loaded with a high-capacity clip that held 13 rounds, Carr said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Westbrooks had an attorney who could comment on the allegations and the team declined to comment Tuesday.

Westbrooks is a starting defensive end who received a one-year extension through 2018 earlier this month, as he had been valuable during the prolonged holdout of All-Pro lineman Aaron Donald.

He has one sack and five tackles in three games. He’s in his fourth season.

Santos goes on IR

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed kicker Cairo Santos on injured reserve and claimed rookie kicker Harrison Butker off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad.

The moves were made Tuesday. The Chiefs did not say whether Santos would be designated to return his season. He would need to remain on IR for at least six weeks, then have two weeks to return to the roster.

Santos was hit on a field goal attempt in Sunday’s victory over the Chargers, drawing a personal foul penalty, but coach Andy Reid did not mention him among the injuries after the game.

Santos also missed time in training camp with a groin injury.

Butker, who finished his college career as Georgia Tech’s career scoring leader, will have an extra day to get up to speed.

Giants co-owner upset

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants say they will internally handle Odell Beckham Jr.’s embarrassing post-touchdown celebration.

Co-owner John Mara said in an email Tuesday that he was unhappy with Beckham’s behavior Sunday in Philadelphia.

The dynamic wide receiver pretended to urinate like a dog after catching a fourth-quarter touchdown in the Giants’ 27-24 loss to the Eagles. He was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. The NFL probably will fine him.

“I do not want to get into a discussion about this, but I will say that I am very unhappy with Odell’s behavior on Sunday and we intend to deal with it internally,” Mara wrote in his email.

Beckham had nine catches for 79 yards and two TDs, including a one-handed one.
