Smith clutch for Scarlet Dragons

MARTINSBURG — Chase Smith’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove home the winning run, breaking a 9-all tie and lifting Central to a wild 10-9 victory over visiting Forest Hills in high school baseball action on Monday.

Smith collected three hits, including a triple, and had four RBIs in the game for Central (18-2), which wiped out a 9-5 sixth-inning deficit. Larry Corle had four hits and scored two runs, and Hunter Liebal and Michael Speck drove in a pair of runs apiece for the Scarlet Dragons.

WINDBER — Riley Christner was dominant on the mound — striking out 17 Portage batters while walking none — to lead Meyersdale to the WestPAC championship game victory at Iron Horse Complex.

Scott Petrunak doubled and triples, and Zach Wiggins doubled to account for the North Division champion Mustangs’ only hits of the game.

Christner helped himself out at the plate by smacking two hits and scoring twice for the South Division champions. Zach Hotchkiss ripped two hits and drove home two runs, while Max Caton collected three RBIs for the Red Raiders.
