NEW PARIS - One can only wonder what might have happened in the Looney Toons cartoon with the Roadrunner and the Wile E. Coyote if the coyote had a sidekick to help him catch the Roadrunner.
On Friday night, Everett had the task of trying to outrun and outsmart the Wileys of Chestnut Ridge.
While the Warriors were able to keep the Lions at bay for three quarters, in the end it was the Wiley duo of Matt and Tyler that finally caught up and devoured the visitors, 31-13, on opening night of high school football at Ridge's Dr. Larry Giovacchini Stadium.
"We kind of wore them (Everett) down as we just kept pounding and pounding," Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker said. "Matt does a good job of hitting up in there, and we were able to complement him with Tyler. We weren't fancy, but we got it done when we needed to."
Despite not using any trickery or explosive plays one is accustomed to from the coyote, the cousins simply and tactfully executed Shoemaker's scheme late in the game as Matt rushed 24 times for 151 yards and two scores, and Tyler carried 19 times for 94 yards. Matt also caught two passes from Tyler for 22 yards.
"Our kids fought really hard. We stuck together and our kids just hung in there the whole game," Everett coach Jerry Fabian said. "We battled until the end, regardless of the scoreboard. I'm really proud of our guys."
While Everett opened up a 13-3 halftime on two big plays - a Kyle Sheaffer 34-yard touchdown pass to Tryston Woy on its first drive of the game and then on a 53-yard interception return by Sheaffer with 1:19 remaining until the half.
The Lions got their only points of the first half on a Sean Van Meter 39-yard field goal that split the uprights.
"We had a couple of blown assignments early on with their option, but we let them know they couldn't be doing that," Shoemaker said. "In the second half, we did a much better job of playing disciplined defense."
After surrendering 122 yards in the first half, the Chestnut Ridge defense tightened up and kept Everett moving backward with minus-14 yards for the final two quarters, including sacks from Colby Hillegass, Conner Buttry and Shane Davis.
While the defense kept the Warriors from getting anything going, the Lions' offense finally got the ball rolling and began to use its size to tire out the young Warrior linemen.
Following an incomplete pass on a drawn up punt attempt that sailed over Sheaffer's head, Ridge set up in prime territory at the Everett 39.
Chestnut Ridge moved the ball down to the 19 on a 6-yard burst up the middle by Josh McGill. However, on the play, Woy was immediately knocked unconscious and was taken off the field by ambulance for precautionary reasons (according to Fabian, he regained consciousness and responded to medical personnel while leaving on the stretcher).
Immediately following the 10-minute delay, Matt Wiley ran right up the gut from 13 yards out to pull his team within three (13-10) at the 1:20 mark of the third.
"We just talked about being disappointed at halftime. I don't know if it was just first-game jitters or what - we just seemed out of sync in everything we did," Shoemaker said. "We just told the kids that we had to get back to the basics, you've got to take care of your own business and not try to do too much. I think in the first half, we tried to do too much with big plays. (In the second half), we made it more straight ahead football."
