Margaret Helen "Margy" McConnell, 88, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of 1625 27th Ave., Altoona, died Friday at the Manor after an extended illness.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Warren A. and Anna (Bettwy) Dodson. She married Melvin L. McConnell on Oct. 19, 1946, at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. He died Dec. 24, 1997.
Surviving are six children: John F. II (Mary Jo) of Altoona, Melvin L. (Ruthie) of DuBois and David J. (Christine), Joan M. (Kenneth) Franks, James M. (Nancy) and Elaine M. (Jeffrey) Spencer, all of Altoona; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three children: Anna Marie Mullen, Frederick W. and Joseph A.; her maternal grandmother, Helen Bettwy, who raised her; three grandchildren: Patrick W., John G. and Shane; a great-grandchild, Allison; and four brothers: Walter, John, Joe and Drew Dodson. Margy was the last of her immediate family.
Margy graduated from Altoona High School. She retired in 1993 as a self-employed beautician with 20 years of service. She previously had worked at GTE Sylvania, as a cafeteria cook at McNelis School and Altoona High School and as a consultant for Weight Limited.
Margy was a member of Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and Cathedral Christian Mothers. She was a member of Newburg Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, a past member of McNelis School PTA and Judge of Elections for Logan Township 7th voting precinct.
Margy enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making ceramics (especially old world Santas) at Blair Senior Center, sewing, knitting, raising Irish setters with her husband and attending Bishop Guilfoyle High School activities. As the steadfast matriarch, Margy held faith, prayer and family as her most important values.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 24, 2014, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. Committal rites will be held at St. Monica Cemetery, Chest Springs.
