Esther Jean Laderman, 92, Our Lady of the Alleghenies Residence, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, died Aug. 10, 2014.
Jeannie, as everyone called her, was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Isaac and Celia (Silverman) Slutzker.
During her youth, she lived with her mother and her maternal uncle, Jacob Silverman, in the Sunset Apartments on Broad Avenue, Altoona. She was confirmed at Temple Beth Israel in her mid-teens. She graduated from Altoona High School, attended Pennsylvania State College, and graduated from Rider College in New Jersey. She was employed as a court reporter and later as a buyer for a New York department store.
Jean married Seymour Laderman of Paterson, N.J. The couple resided in New Jersey for many years before relocating to Palm Aire in Pompano Beach, Fla. A miniature Schnauzer named Whiskey, in multiple versions, was a valued member of the household for years. Mr. Laderman died in 2008, preceding his wife's departure by six years to the day.
Jean drew great joy from her family connections, connections renewed regularly through attendance at significant life events and warmly-reciprocated visits to Altoona and Toledo, Ohio. She is survived by cousins and their spouses, who in the area include Attorney Louis Silverman and wife, Veronica Samborsky, of Port Matilda and Dr. Joseph Silverman and wife, Patricia, and Richard Slutzker, all of Altoona.
A funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, located one block from where Jean grew up. Rabbi Audrey Korotkin of Temple Beth Israel will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Sinai Cemetery.
