A walk to fight lung cancer kicks off a day-long event Friday at the Logan Valley Mall to highlight healthy living.
The Second Annual Beacon of Light on Lung Cancer Walk will begin the four-hour Altoona Mirror Health-O-Rama, which brings together health provider vendors from across the region and beyond.
The walk is co-sponsored by the Lung Disease Foundation of Central Pennsylvania, a nonprofit group founded by Dr. George Zlupko of Altoona and Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown.
The hospital is an acute-care facility serving nine counties, said Kelly Blake, the hospital's chief executive officer.
Its patients come from area hospitals with mostly respiratory illnesses, about 60 percent, Blake said, which is why the hospital wanted to co-sponsor the walk.
The foundation tries to educate the public about lung disease, Zlupko said.
"In addition, funds derived from our various fund-raising efforts are used to support this particular effort and also to provide additional monetary support to patients with lung disease, '' he said.
Zlupko said money raised from the walk also helps pay for programs at the Lung Disease Center in Altoona that Zlupko has opened, including the lung disease early detection program and the sleep disorder network.
The lung cancer walk begins at 8 a.m., followed by the Health-O-Rama that starts at 10 a.m., said Mirror Marketing Manager Amy Hanna-Eckenrode.
The Lung Disease Center is one of the several local, regional and national vendors at the 10th annual Health-O-Rama.
"(The show) is designed to inspire and encourage health-conscious consumers to embrace a life of health, wellness and fitness through awareness of natural and alternative solutions, education and (the) lifelong benefits of living a healthy lifestyle,'' she said.
Health-O-Rama, which is free and runs until 2 p.m., features educational seminars, demonstrations, prizes, entertainment, healthy tips, wellness products and professional advice.
