Robert Francis Smithmyer, 85, Altoona, died Wednesday night at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System after a brief illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Roy F. and Edna Mary (Obermyer) Smithmyer. He married Joan V. Rouzer on July 30, 1955, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont.
Surviving are his wife; four children: Robert F. (Anna) of Bedford, Steven M. (Judy) of Oak Ridge, N.C., Mark J. of Erie and Lisa M. (Carl) Fischer of Altoona; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, David N.; and five siblings: Eleanor Cole, Marie Lupold, Cassie Accia, Charles and Dan. He was the last of his immediate family.
Bob was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an airman first class in the Korean conflict and received the National Defense Service and Good Conduct medals. He retired in 1993 as an electrician at Norfolk Southern, Altoona, with 30 years of service.
Bob was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, Bavarian Aid Society and American Legion. He enjoyed electronics, reading, participating in the Senior Olympics at Blair Senior Center and playing pinochle, and he loved to joke with family and friends.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, Monsignor Robert C. Mazur officiating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
