John Patrick "Jack" Forr, 79, Altoona, passed away quietly Tuesday at UPMC Altoona after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of John Augustus and Elizabeth Amanda (O'Neil) Forr.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary Maddeline "Matt" (Burger); three sons: David, Kevin and Bruce; eight grandchildren: Sabrina, John, Krista, Evan, Taylor, Morgan, Dylan and Cassidy; a sister, Margie Lindeman; and a brother, David.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Reading.
Jack was a graduate of Altoona High School and held various jobs before working for the PPG plant in Tipton. He was employed there from 1966 until his retirement in 1994. During this time, he enjoyed extensive international travel and was awarded a patent associated with heated back windows in 1993.
He served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Company C, 2nd Battalion, 112th Infantry, for 33 years, being honorably discharged Feb. 11, 1985, at the rank of first sergeant (E8). He served in recent years with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), which works to ensure that military reserve and National Guard veterans retain their jobs after returning from deployments.
Jack greatly enjoyed attending services at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Altoona, where he served as an usher. He was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife, sons and their families. He had a sense of humor which permeated every aspect of his life and served him well in good times as well as bad.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 8, 2014, at Santella Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 806 11th St., Altoona. Interment at Calvary Cemetery in Altoona will immediately follow the service with full military honors.
