Tom Smith got the five runs he was hoping for, and they were more than enough for Andy Smithmyer as ProActive Sports stayed alive in the Greater City Baseball League playoffs Wednesday.
Conrad Chiropractic/Lilly American Legion pitchers held ProActive to a total of four runs in winning the first two games of the series, but Smithmyer was the man Wednesday, limiting Lilly to just three hits as ProActive notched a 5-2 victory at Veterans Memorial Field.
Game 4 in the best-of-five set will be played at 6:30 p.m. today at Vets.
"You hope for it," Smith said of scoring five runs, "but those guys are pretty good.
"We scratched out five runs, and Andy pitched a real good game. When you hold (Lilly) to three hits, you're doing a great job."
Jarrod Klausman and John Snyder accounted for five of ProActive's eight hits. Both had two doubles, one RBI apiece and both scored a run. Their first-inning doubles gave ProActive an early 1-0 lead.
"We need the guys in the top of the order to come through for us," Smith said. "Those guys are solid and we need them to generate some offense, and they were able to do that tonight.
Lilly got its two runs in the second when Lucas McCoy doubled, Nick Wendell singled and Ryan Ickes hit a sacrifice fly.
"We showed some fight after we gave up the lead," Smith said. "We came back and took the lead and added on. Those were the things they were doing in the first two games."
ProActive tied the game in the fourth when Jim Clancy's single plated Matt Ballos, who led off with a walk. Snyder's second double, Tyler Neff's single, plus a walk and two Lilly errors gave ProActive a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Klausman's second double scored Clancy, who had walked, to make it 5-2 in the sixth.
Smithmyer was tough after the second inning, holding Lilly to only one hit and two walks the rest of the way. The big right-hander faced just 13 batters over the last four innings and retired the final 10 in a row.
"Today, I just threw strikes," Smithmyer said. "Plus, we got some timely hitting and good defense, and that's the name of the game.
"I was mixing my slider pretty good," he said. "That was keeping them off balance."
Smithmyer, a former Altoona Area High School standout, attended Potomac State and East Carolina and had a tryout with the Independent League Washington Wild Things this past spring.
Lilly manager Lucas McCoy agreed that pitching is still the name of the game.
"Their guy (Smithmyer) was good tonight," McCoy said. "He pitched well. He might not have had his best stuff, but we had only three hits on the (score) board and you're not going to win 95 percent of games with three hits.
"Tip your hat to him, and they extended the series a little bit. (But) we'll be back after it tomorrow."
