Alfred K. "Fred" Dangel, 75, Hollidaysburg, died Sunday, July 27, 2014, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Alfred and Anna Grace (Neff) Dangel. He married Catherine A. Macionsky on Aug. 23, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Stephanie Dangel and husband, Tom Reiter, of Sewickley, Karla Russell and husband, Todd, of Hollidaysburg and Laurie Peddie and husband, Bruce, of Monroe, La.; eight grandchildren: Phillip, Jacqueline and Nicolette Haley, Annie Peddie, Carly (Peddie) Bender and Teresa, Fritz and Dominic Reiter; and a great-grandson, Logan Haley.
Fred was a 1956 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and a 1960 graduate of the University of Miami, where he received a Bachelor of Education. He also earned a master's degree from Utah State University. He played football and baseball for the University of Miami Hurricanes, and he also played professional football for the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Colts and the Atlantic Coast Football League's Harrisburg Capitols.
He retired from the Spring Cove School District with 37 years of service, having taught health, physical education, driver's education and audiovisual media at Central High School, Martinsburg. He coached football and baseball at Central and was the director of the Blue Knob Ski Club, and he also was a PIAA football official.
Fred was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking, and he was an avid reader.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no public funeral service or visitation.
