A Norfolk, Va., woman who appeared to have killed her 8-year-old daughter and then herself July 23 was formerly of Altoona.
Obituaries for Karla Mae Mihok, 43, and her daughter Katharine Renai Mihok, appeared together in the Saturday issue of the Mirror.
Family members contacted in Blair and Cambria counties declined to speak about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
A July 25 story of the Virginian-Pilot states that Mihok, of the 400 block of Woodford Street, Norfolk, is believed to have shot her daughter, then herself at their home, according to Cpl. Melinda Wray and Officer Daniel Hudson, spokesmen for the Norfolk Police Department.
The story states that neighbors said the girl (Katharine) had special needs. Both mother and daughter were found dead during the afternoon.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene, between Bayview Boulevard and Tidewater Drive, about 2:40 p.m.
Karla was a 1987 graduate of Altoona Area High School and subsequently earned an associate degree from Point Park University, her obituary states.
She and her husband, Michael, married in 2001 and settled in Norfolk.
Katharine was born Dec. 20, 2005, and was an energetic and happy child, her obituary states.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages either a donation to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters or Operation Smile, both in Norfolk.
