Due to a combination of weather-related problems and a lack of teams, the 2014 National Amateur Baseball Federation Regional Tournament has been cancelled.
Rain and wet weather had already put a damper on the George B. Kelley Federation league championship series between Martin Oil and Park Furniture at Vets Field, pushing back Game 3 of the best-of-five games title series to Tuesday night at Vets Field, and Game 4 to Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Game 5, if necessary, will be played Thursday at 7 p.m.
The backlog caused a problem in scheduling for the area teams, and the three out-of-town teams who had been set to participate in this weekend's regional - one from New York and two from Maryland - also had scheduling issues as well.
This past Monday, George B. Kelley Federation president Tom Stout and National Amateur Baseball Federation Executive Director Charlie Blackburn decided to cancel the NABF Regional tournament, which had been scheduled to start Thursday and run through Saturday at Vets Field.
"The weather had some bearing on the decision, but some of the other teams that were supposed to come up here weren't sure if they were going to be able to make it here, so we were just spinning our wheels,'' Stout said. "[So] the regional tournament is not going to be held.''
Canceling the regional tournament will actually prove beneficial for the two area teams, Martin Oil and Park Furniture, both of whom will now advance to the NABF national tournament next week in Struthers, Ohio.
Previous plans had called for just the Kelley Federation league champion to advance to the NABF national tournament, with the league runner-up to participate in the regional tournament.
"We're sending two teams to the national tournament now,'' Stout said. "Martin Oil and Park Furniture ought to both be happy to get this great opportunity.''
